The Egg and Dart molding came from the Egyptian style Ionic order it became really popular during the Renaissance. The pattern consists of an alternating pattern of the egg shape and arrow shape. 

 

The molding has a dynamic look to it, and the overall dimensions of the moldings vary quite a bit in range. The smaller fascia comes in 2-3/4 to 5-1/2. With dimensions of such a range gives you many choices in the way that you incorporate into your design. The Hanson and Haliflax moldings are thinner, and the overall egg and dart pattern is large. The dimensions and proportions of the molding are significant because while the molding itself is rather small-- the egg and dart pattern takes up most of the molding design. Using that molding, you could choose to take a panel molding underneath the egg and dart molding to make it look more elaborate and dynamic. 

 

The Marion and the Compton moldings have the egg and art pattern while still having another pattern and having a much larger profile which adds quite a bit more drama to the design. The larger moldings could be dressed up in a way that brings attention to the egg and dart pattern as well as the smaller pattern below. One idea is t use metallic color to highlight as a relief pattern.
