Dentil Wood Molding

Dentil molding is one of the most ancient styles of all of the classical molding styles available. It is a molding that is in the overall Ionic order. The Ionic order is the order that is more detailed than the Doric but is less embellished than the Corinthian order. The overall proportions of the dentil molding are that each one of the teeth has the same width as the measurement for the space between each one of the widths. The dentil moldings originated from the architectural genius of Ancient Greece in the construction of a portico. The molding style spread through to the temples of the Asia Minor as well as to Persia. The dentil molding style is also featured in the design of the Pantheon in Rome.

Our molding selection features dentil moldings that are larger and more dramatic or something that is smaller and more dainty looking. The Cotuit and Hyannis Wood moldings are not the largest ones in terms of the fascia and the projection, but the teeth in a dentil molding are larger. The larger molding is excellent for high ceilings because the larger details make a visible and impressive impact on the overall space. When the ceilings are tall, the larger details will be less likely to get lost from a farther distance.

If you have shorter ceilings or are using the dentil molding for as furniture trim than you should consider a molding with a smaller tooth. The Compton dental molding is more modest in its projection as well as in its fascia, but the Chatham dentil molding has a smaller pattern while having the largest fascia out of the available dentil moldings.

When choosing the molding size, the height of the ceiling is not the only thing to consider. While a molding with a larger design looks to be more appropriate, for shorter ceilings, some designs could call for higher drama and a more eccentric look. It is something that would then have to be planned purposefully, but with the fascia and the projection being on the shorter side which does not cut off part of the ceiling and wall which in turn does not shorten the look of it overall.
