WOOD DENTIL AND EGG-AND-DART MOLDING
Dentil Molding
Dentil molding is one of the most ancient styles of all of the classical molding styles
available. It is the a molding that is in the overall Ionic order. The Ionic order is the order that is more detailed than the Doric, but is less embellished than the Corinthian order. The overall proportions of the dentil molding is that each one of the teeth has the same width as the measurement for the space between each one of the widths. The dentil moldings originated from the architectural genius of Ancient Greece in the construction of a portico. The molding style spread through to the temples of the Asia Minor as well as to Persia. The dentil molding style is also featured in the design of the Pantheon in Rome.
Our molding selection features dentil moldings that are larger and more dramatic or something that is smaller and more dainty looking. The Cotuit and Hyannis Wood moldings are not the largest ones in terms of the fascia and the projection, but the teeth in a in the dentil molding are larger. The larger molding is great for high ceilings because the larger details make a visible and impressive impact on the overall space. When the ceilings are tall, the larger details will be less likely to get lost from a farther distance.
If you have shorter ceilings or are using the dentil molding for as furniture trim, than you should consider a molding with a smaller tooth. The Compton dental molding is smaller in its projection as well as in its fascia, but the Chatham dentil molding has the smaller pattern while having the largest fascia out of the dentil moldings that are available.
When choosing the molding size, the height of the ceiling is not the only thing to consider. While a molding with a larger design looks to be more appropriate, for shorter ceilings some designs could call for higher drama and a more eccentric look. It is something that would than have to be planned in a purposeful manner, but with the fascia and the projection being on the shorter side which does not cut off part of the ceiling and wall which in turn dues not shorten the
look of it overall.
Egg and Dart Molding
The Egg and Dart molding came from the Egyptian style Ionic order it became really popular during the Renaissance. The pattern consists of alternating pattern of the egg shape and a an arrow shape.
The molding has a dynamic look to it and the overall dimensions of the moldings vary quite a bit in range. The smaller fascia comes in 2-3/4 to 5-1/2. With dimensions of such a range gives you many choices in the way that you incorporate into your design. The Hanson and Haliflax moldings are thinner and the overall egg and dart pattern is large. The dimensions and proportions of the molding are great because while the molding itself is rather small-- the egg and dart pattern takes up most of the molding design. Using that molding, you could choose to take a panel molding underneath the egg and dart molding to make it look more elaborate and dynamic.
The Marion and the Compton moldings have the egg and art pattern while still having another pattern and having a much larger profile which adds quite a bit more drama to the design. The larger moldings could be dressed up in a way that brings attention to the egg and dart pattern as well as the smaller pattern below. One idea is t use metallic color to highlight as a the relief pattern.
