Lighting and Space

Lighting fixtures bring your home interior to life. Lighting gives form and texture to a room, warms a dark corners, highlights a favorite pieces of art, or create a right mood. Changes in the brightness of light that reflects from the floor, wall, and ceiling, has an affect on our visual perception of space proportions. That is why by changing brightness you can "correct" the proportions and volume of your space.

lighting tricks and tips

To visually expend space in a small rooms you should increase lighting saturation on the walls by using finishing materials and wall decorations with good reflective qualities.

To "bring walls together" in a large space use finishing materials with good reflective qualities on the floor and ceilings

home lightingUse lighting fixtures with "hard light" to eliminate large spaces

Windows, pictures and mirrors tend to open up a space, make it appear wider

To make a narrow walkway appear wider you should consider painting the wall on the end of the walkway a lighter color than rest of the walls. To make an illusion stronger - generously light back the wall with the lighting fixtures

You can "cut" or visually separate a long walkway with bright light directed across

Usually ceiling lighting fixtures are placed in the middle line of the ceiling. In a narrow space this type of positioning will make interior appear even narrower. For visual expansion shift the line 3 to 4 inches towards one of the wall. By locating ceiling fixtures closer to one of the longer walls you will visually expand the space

Placing a strait line of the same lighting fixtures on the ceiling will enhance the perspective of the interior space

To make ceiling appear higher you can do several things:

The color of the ceiling should be much lighter then the walls.

Very light floors with reflective surface tend to visually lover the space. By making  floor darker and using a matt finish on it you will make space appear higher. If you do have a light floors it doesn't mean that you have to refinish them. For this matter, placing a nice area rug with colors that are darker than the walls will do the trick

lighting fixtures

Lighting fixtures that direct light upwards will make the ceiling appear higher (on the picture shown Angela lighting fixture from our collection of fixtures for indirect lighting)

lighting

Placing crown molding with indirect lighting will "lift up" you ceiling. (On the picture shown specially designed Winston crown molding for indirect lighting from our collection of crown molding for indirect lighting)

Less tolerant to light documents, photography, art (watercolor, tempera, pastel), tapestries, embroidery and closing made from natural materials. By norms level of lighting objects like these should be no more than 50lk.

You can separate living space in to  functional zones not only with furniture or room dividers, but using lighting fixtures like sconces, table lamps or floor lamps
