Kitchen
The Finishing Touches for Kitchen

Be aware that when you are adding the finishing touches and the accents to the room that you are adding the necessary kitchen details. Also, it is important that your kitchen’s finishing touches are polished classy, not tacky or gimmicky. You can have kitchen details that are bold, yet subtle blending into the room while still standing out. You should keep in mind hardware with original details, a great molding, a tiled mural, stenciled details, or a hand-painted mural. You can also buy uniquely designed kitchen accessories such as salt and pepper shakers, a wine opener, or others.
You can create a beautiful impression by creating a still-life composition with arrangement of objects, you should keep in mind how it will look – that means you should think about the sizes of the objects as well as the color. If you would like to make an arrangement of two to three objects, make sure that they vary in size with one of them being larger. That way they will look as if they belong together and are there for purpose, not ended up there by some chance. Think of where you hang it as well – if it would be above where one would normally sit, make sure that it is high enough so that no one would hit their head on it. You can also use clear containers of pickled vegetables and spices.
Keep a stack of cotton hand towels and change them at whim. One week they can be mint-green and white, and the next they may be pink-and-white check. Or you can put towels of different plaids or checks in a pile. For everyday use, the cotton kitchen hand towels from house-wares and kitchen supply stores are ideal. They’re inexpensive, absorbent, colorful, and don’t need to be ironed. If you enjoy a pastel color palette in the summer, in the winter you may choose sunrise-yellow and grass-green. If all the colors you pick have the same chroma intensity, they will work well together. Just as the rainbow harmonizes different colors, so can you. The key is always in the clarity of hue. Never mix toned-down, neutral colors with clear colors. The eye will reject the dull color in favor of the clear one.

This was a great article! Such a good idea about the arrangements of things, and picture definitely got me thinking about some projects I want to do to make my kitchen even more beautiful. Thank you for the inspiring ideas!

I love adding the very last details. I feel like it is the details and the finishing touches that define the style and the function of the room. In my kitchen I decided to go with a floral theme. I did a few stencils as a back splash and hand painted flowers on ceramic jars that i use for spices and such. It completely transformed my newly renovated kitchen.
- Donna, August 25th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
We are renovating our kitchen as we speak and my wife has bought so many little trinkets, it’s a disaster. i see all that and i think that there is truly no room for anything else… or to even cook for that matter. I have been trying to tell her that there is such thing as too much and i’m losing the battle!
- Edward, August 25th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Ed, I think the only way you can really win this one is if you get a designer to come in and tell her that. Very few people will go against a professional opinion. I mean, you can always wait until your wife goes out of town and throw all of the trinkets away, but I would go with the first idea. I think that if someone else would give her their opinion, she will lighten up on the decorations.
- Kelly, August 25th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
As much as I love trinkets and finishing touches, I really feel like if you cannot use something in your kitchen, it has no business being in the kitchen. I usually just get the things that I would use, but have them be in a bit more decorative. I get the storage tins, as well as certain cooking utensils that i store in such a way that it looks decorative.
- Michelle, August 27th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Little details helps pull everything together. They are the perfect final touch.
- Molly, August 28th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
I just put on the knobs that I just ordered and I absolutely love them. They are the Tuscan Bounty knobs and they add a nice splash of color to my cabinets and adds so much charm to my kitchen. I highly recommmend them!
- Joleigh, September 3rd, 2008 at 11:41 am
I agree with Kelly. I think that putting too much in your Kitchen closes up the space. Not to mention that most of the times I see peoples kitchens and they don’t match at all. For me, I feel that kitchens should be clean, free of clutter, yet still be functional. I prefer keeping everything out of sight unless its being used. I guess you would call me more contemporary than others.
- Jessica, September 3rd, 2008 at 12:14 pm
I personally love adding my own touch to my kitchen (even my little knick knacks – although I DO have a limit for those too). And although I do not have a traditional kitchen (my style is more like bold and fun bright colors) I think it suits me perfectly.
- Meredith, September 5th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
A bold and beautiful kitchen is definitely a plus for a house in my mind, i think the only reason why it wouldn’t be is if you are trying to sell your home. I keep thinking that everything has drastically changed and most people go for more innovative and newer things, but the there are still plenty of people who prefer kitchens that resemble a blank canvas– i’m really not sure if it is because they would like to make their own possibilities happen or because they are not able to steer away from the mundane and the ordinary.
- Linda, September 7th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I prefer a nice white kitchen when I move into a new space. Like the people above have commented already, I think adding your own personal touch is key. Although sometimes having a design in there already can actually be inspiring. For instance, in the picture above, with the walls and the molding, you can always keep the molding, just paint! Just some friendly advice.
- Fiona, September 10th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I think that the architectural details in a kitchen are a good place to draw inspiration for other rooms of the house. It is a room that combines the most amount of different materials and different objects– it has the paint elements, moldings, counter tops, the appliances, the floors, the trinkets, the larger appliances– all can be incredibly inspiring.
- Kathy, September 17th, 2008 at 11:10 am
My wife and I chose some bold colors for our kitchen and they work very nicely. We are both what you could call different, but everyone who has ever come into our kitchen is awed by it. And in response to the article, you are right about the same color intensity. Our bold purple and green really liven it up, but it would look awful if one of them was a lighter shade than it is now.
- Peter, September 24th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Adding the finishing touches is my favorite part about moving into a new home. Putting those final touches in pulls everything together and makes it feel like the moving is complete! I personally love adding all the hardware last because then I can sit back and admire all of the work we have put into the kitchen. Plus, everyone loves to comment on it.
- Nelly, October 1st, 2008 at 9:38 am
I like the picture that is featured for this article. Is that a molding that is used to create the shelves?
- Amber, October 9th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Amber – yes, it is. I have done something very similar in my bathroom, but it looks nice in the kitchen too, doesn’t it?
- Tess, October 30th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Oh wow! I would have never thought to use molding as a shelf. I think that is a great idea, and It looks so much cooler than just a plain shelf. Who would have ever thought…
- Marg, October 31st, 2008 at 3:46 pm
I just redid a kitchen that had some similarities to the picture above. I wonder if they got their ideas from here. Anyway, it looks great and it was really easy to do.
- Clint, November 4th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I think the products on your site is great. I also love how there are advice articles and your inspiration gallery does just that: it has inspired a lot of thoughts of what I will be able to do with my own house. I especially liked this article. I think changing the colors and feel of the kitchen just by changing the towels. It’s a nice, inexpensive way, to make the kitchen ever-changing!
- Gloria, November 10th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
I love finishing touches on a room that are bit unconventional. I think it is interesting to take dried plants and interesting objects and put them behind glass to display them. It gives a certain “artsiness” while looking very elegant.
- Rebbecca, November 12th, 2008 at 1:44 am
Me and my boyfriend are all about the finishing touches in our new home. It’s just so nice to have everything completed perfectly to what we like. I agree with Gloria.. the towel idea is great. What better way to liven/change things up by changing little details like that?
- Aaron, November 12th, 2008 at 10:24 am
I really like the idea of the hand-painted mural.. maybe I can actually put all of my old art classes to use!
- Olivia, November 12th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
I think I may need to steal the idea from the photo. I really like the deep red and the yellow/gold. It would be a nice touch to my kitchen.
- Bailey, November 13th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Hi. I just wanted to leave my two cents about this article as well. I think it’s great how a website like this even has advice on how to set up the home. I also like the little ideas that are presented. Well done!
- KC, November 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I definitely think it’s great to add some creative touches to any living space. It defines that space for whoever is living there. And it’s another conversation piece as well.
- Michael, November 20th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I just put up some wood carvings and they look great. It really adds a lot to the kitchen. It is amazing how one little subtle change can do so much.
- Brian, November 24th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
I think my favorite part about moving in is adding the finishing touches. I love adding the little touches, like cute little knick knacks and such. Plants are also a must. Seeing what is written here has opened my eyes to new options of decorating my house.
- Joan, November 26th, 2008 at 10:21 am
I personally love love love the hardware that is available on this site. Now that’s what I call finishing touches! There are so many options and they all look so lovely! I want to look around my house and see where I can put these beautiful creations! I have so many ideas, I really don’t even know where to start! haha!
- Les, December 2nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
My wife and I bought a condo by our favorite country club a few months ago, and we decided to be funny and get the golfer knobs for our new kitchen. They have turned out to be a big success. Everyone asks where we got them from. So this site should be looking for some new orders for some classy golfer knobs. It feels good to start a trend.
- Thomas, December 4th, 2008 at 11:04 am
That is a good idea! I’m a contractor and we’re about to change some of the condos by the country club in our neighboring town. I think I might have to look into these knobs a little further.
- Patrick, December 9th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
My husband and I love wine, and so we decided to remodel our kitchen and make a little “wine pantry”. On the doors to the cabinets that we put on one of the walls, we used these really detailed knobs that were beautifully painted. It adds the perfect accent to the room! They look fantastic.
- Pamela, December 15th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
The different kinds of knobs on this website are truly amazing. I think there is so much variety that anybody could find some kind of knob to go along with any kind of theme that there might be for a kitchen, or anywhere else in the house for that matter. They are so beautiful!
- Heidi, December 17th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Yeah I totally agree. I love this website, they make everything so user friendly. The Knobs are BEAUTIFUL!!
- Meredith, December 23rd, 2008 at 1:02 pm
The decorative hardware available on this website are not just beautiful, they are absolutely gorgeous! I feel in love with the twig pulls and the leaf knobs as soon as I saw them. They match perfectly with the decor in our woodsy kitchen.
- Nancy, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
My wife is into the same thing. We have a lot of natural beauty around us, since we live in Vermont in a wooded area. After seeing the twig pulls that you were talking about, my wife and I are in agreement: we’re going to make a newly beautiful addition to the cabinets in our kitchen. We’re both glad that we saw this. You gave us a great idea! Thank you.
- Thomas, December 24th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I fell in love with the knobs as well. After seeing all of the different knobs I realized that there is no way i could ever decide on just a single style. Because I live in the Adirondacks there is great beauty around my house and there I have always wanted to somehow bring the beauty of the outside into my house. Anything else that is nature-themed on the market is far too tacky. I was so happy to find all of these knobs and pulls. I am planning on using multiple nature-motif ones to create something special. I love the idea of having an eclectic design because it makes the whole room really cozy. I still haven’t decided on the particular combination of the knobs, but I am very excited to find out what I can come up with.
- Rhonda, December 29th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Woodworking is my hobby and for Christmas this past year I made each of my little girls a little “treasure chest”. Each one of my daughters (all four of them) picked out their own knobs that I put on each of their boxes, and it was amazing how each one of my daughters were able to find something that suited their personality perfectly. The knobs on this website look great.
- Peter, December 30th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
That’s a pretty good idea. I forget that knobs like the ones on this site are for more than just the kitchen. You have to admit though, they really do add to the kitchen. It might be what you would call a nice “finishing touch.” LOL!
- Lewe, December 31st, 2008 at 10:01 am
I don’t know what they mean by finishing touches. My wife is always putting “finishing touches” into our kitchen. I’m pretty sure it will never actually be finished. But the things that she does put into our kitchen really do add to it – and in a nice way.
- Thomas, January 2nd, 2009 at 4:49 pm
I would have to say that “finishing touches” add a little something, that’s for sure. It’s what brings everything together and completes the kitchen, or any room for that matter.
- Mark, January 5th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
We added some nice molding to our kitchen. It really made the whole kitchen stand out a little bit, which was great since that is where everyone pretty much migrates to anyway. A lot of people got to see it for the first time during the holiday season, and we got a lot of good feedback. In fact, look for some orders coming through from folks in North Carolina!
- Michael, January 6th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
That’s a pretty good idea. And I guess molding would be considered a finishing touch! I should look into that myself.
- James, January 7th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Often times when we look at homes, whether we’re in the market for a new one or we’re just looking around a friend’s house, we to focus on big things like structure, flooring, and wall color. I know that I often notice what the kitchen cabinets are made of, but rarely do I give a second thought to the hinging or door handles. And the interesting thing about that is that my wife is totally the opposite. I recall when I wanted to make an offer on our new home, one of the first things she wanted to change, even before we knew if we would end up buying the house – was the decorative hardware around the kitchen while I hadn’t even noticed the need to change anything. Nevertheless, I’m surely the type to want to make things look as nice as possible and have pointed Julie to InvitingHome.com. Not only does InvitingHomes.com have awesome home accessories, but they carry a great assortment of one of my new favorite items, crown molding. Why crown molding you ask? Well, let’s just say that Julie and I aren’t the most accomplished painters and those edges where the walls and ceilings meet can always look better. Besides, crown molding adds value to the house with little cost.
- mike, January 9th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Wow, those were some pretty good tips Mike. I’ve been noticing how boring and plain the knobs and pulls are in my kitchen. It will be nice to add some nice touches to our home. And molding isn’t a bad idea either. It definitely seems like something to look into.
- John, January 13th, 2009 at 10:56 am
We just added these gorgeous knobs to our cabinets in the bathroom. The colors in there are blue and white (of course) and the blue jeweled knobs are just so beautiful. They really “pop” out.
- Susan, January 14th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
My favorite finishing touches are the little things that are around the kitchen, and the placement of these things. I don’t like too many accessories cluttering up what little counter space I have, but I have a couple of little apple things, like an apple candy dish among other little apple themed items in my kitchen.
- Melanie, January 15th, 2009 at 10:55 am
My wife insisted that we have an apple theme in our kitchen, it’s a country style so it makes sense. We have a lot of deep reds and dark greens – not a typical kitchen I guess. My wife just told me most kitchens are painted yellow. I guess we like to be different though.
- Woody, January 19th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
I can actually picture that scene, and I think it sounds lovely. Especially if you live in New England. I live in New Hampshire and we have lots of apple orchards in my area. I love apples, and I myself have an apple theme. Maybe not such deep and dark colors, but I think it looks good in my own kitchen.
- Renate, January 20th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I don’t think I ever have finishing touches. I keep changing everything all the time. Last time I thought my kitchen would be officially done after I got some new knobs. And then I decided that I needed to change the color scheme and get new towels and new color coordinated accessories. And then I figured that I needed to stain my cabinets slightly darker to match the towels better (don’t ask!). I just keep changing everything. I gets it keeps me busy and I have something new or different about my kitchen every time my family comes home for the holidays. It keeps things interesting.
- Monica, January 22nd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I understand where Monica is coming from, however it is really my husband who is forever changing everything. He’s the kind of guy who rearranges every living space once a month. Thankfully everything in our kitchen is stationary so there isn’t much moving around in that area of the house. I guess you could say it is my domain. Still, we are never finished decorating. We change the theme of our kitchen with the seasons. In the fall, we have the traditional autumn colors: Reds, Oranges, Golds. In the winter it is more like deep indigos and deep reds and burgundys. In the spring is when we bring out all of the lighter colors like yellows and sage. During the summer we tend to lean towards bright yellow and white. It’s all a matter of preference I guess. My personality/mood relies heavily on the seasons, so of course “my domain” changes with the seasons too. It’s nice to change things up a bit, don’t you think?
- Jo, February 10th, 2009 at 11:07 am
I liked this article because it made me think of new ways to change minor details in my kitchen. I never would have thought about changing subtle things like the colors of the kitchen towels. It is nice to think there is something as small as that, that can make a difference.
- Megan, February 13th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
I think the details are what makes a kitchen stand out. And having those final little touches can really complete a room. And it’s nice to see subtle changes here and there while visiting a friend’s home. It keeps the room decor fresh.
- Gloria, February 17th, 2009 at 11:05 am
My wife just had me do a little in-home project and I put some wood carvings on our kitchen cabinets. They came out really nicely and I am thoroughly impressed with the craftsmanship of the carvings. They look great on the website and now they look even better in our kitchen.
- James, February 26th, 2009 at 10:18 am
My wife has been nagging and hasseling after me to fix up our kitchen for the past 10 years. I suppose it’s about time I officially finish it. Wood carvings seems like a great way to go if I want to decorate my cabinets. I think my other half would really like it too. I’ve been looking around to see what other changes can be made and I think I will surprise her with some new knobs and pulls as well. (I’ll have to get my daughter’s opinion of course; with my luck my wife will hate my lack of style).
- Todd, March 5th, 2009 at 11:50 am
I never really thought about different hues and tones of colors, but it makes complete sense. I’ve been wondering what has been wrong with my color choices for the towels in my bathroom (I know this is an article meant for the kitchen, but towels are in the bathroom too!) I’ll have to go see what I can do them now. I’ve been meaning to change the way my house looks anyway. This seems like a simple, easy and inexpensive solution.
- Isabel, March 12th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Hi there, I have just remodeled my kitchen cabinets, and have been looking for unique knobs to tie it all together. I came across your website and saw that there were so many great styles to choose from! I finally decided on the fruit bouquet style. I just have to say they came in the mail, and they are absolutely gorgeous! Not only do they bring the whole theme together they are such good quality! Definetly added the finishing touches to my kitchen!
- Elenor, March 16th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
I have recently decided to redo my kitchen and have decided that molding would be a nice finishing touch. I think it will really add a lot of nice detail and I am excited to get this project started. I might even incorperate something similar into the breakfast nook. We’re still in the planning stage, but it is very exciting.
- Barbara, April 15th, 2009 at 11:21 am
I always thought that a bland kitchen is something you just have to get used to an make do with the particular lack of color or any particular lack of spunk. After reading this article and looking though your products, i have a new surge of creativity and many ideas for my kitchen. I also think that it is a great thing to do to get the whole family involved that everyone will be sure to have a kitchen that they love.
