Ceiling Decor
Our Days Ceilings
Ceiling today don’t carry the same visual impact, yet the ceiling is a fundamental feature that contributes to the overall presentation and feel of a house. One of the greatest differences between the decoration of houses one hundred years ago and now is that today there is an appalling disregard for the ceiling design and aesthetic dimension of a ceiling. While ceiling take up the same space as the floor, few people consider spending even a fraction of their decorating budget on the ceiling design to make ceiling beautiful.
Think of your ceiling as the sky. Whether the roof of a house is flat, sloping, or curved, most interior ceilings are flat, mirroring the image of the floor in size and shape. If your ceiling isn’t flat or symmetrical, consider correcting it. Feng shui practitioners believe that an angled ceiling dissipates energy. If you have a gable roof with exposed interior beams, the symmetry of one part answering to the other is visually pleasing. The slopes of the ceiling can be painted sky-blue in contrast with the wall color to give both wall and ceiling definition.
Although modern architecture does not emphasize ceiling, you can make your ceiling design more fascinating by learning how to create ceiling illusions. If you have unavoidable structural elements as part of your ceiling, such as air conditioning ducts or beams in awkward places, make them part of the room color scheme rather than trying to hide them, because that often draws more attention to the problem. It’s forgivable in ceiling design for an old house to have some pipes running along a ceiling, whereas boxing them in would lower the height of the ceiling, making you feel crushed. Ceiling in houses and apartments usually range from about eight feet to an expansive twelve feet high. Many New York apartments are prewar buildings with ceiling averaging nine feet six inches high; most newer buildings have lower ceilings. Ideally, the ceiling height should be in proportion to the size of the room. The larger the room, the higher the ceiling can be and still please the eye.

Before visiting this website, I had no idea that panel molding was what made those interesting frames on ceilings and walls. Now, I have so many ideas, I do not even know where to start!

You have no idea what it is like to have a ceiling that is completely amazing after seriously thinking that there is no way that the space could actually be used. I had a gorgeous ceiling dome installed in the dining room and it is absolutely gorgeous. It brought the whole space up and to a complete different level. I am in love with my new inspiration!

I am a designer. I absolutely love ceiling designs. For some reason, though, it is hard to convince some people. Many of my clients are so resistant to the ideas that a ceiling could get as much attention as the rest of their home. Many are just afraid that they will be trapped in a box that is filled with far too many designs for them to all look cohesive. My job had become to show my clients that there is no need to be afraid of ceiling designs– and it does not have to be a Sistine Chapel to make a great impact, but the ceiling should never be ignored.

I just want to start by saying that I LOVE your website. It is so user friendly and everything is soo straight forward. With that being said, I have to agree with all the other comments posted above. I would have never thought to spend money on “decorating” the ceiling; however, my contractor told me that it would greatly enhance my sitting room. Everyone that visits my house comments how beautiful the room is. I love it so much, that I am beginning to remodel every room in the same fashion!!

It wasn’t until i read this article that I started thinking up of what I can do on the ceiling of my home. Until then, I really have not thought about going past just drawing clouds on the ceiling of my little boy’s room. I have never really thought of using my ceiling in such a way. When you think about it: it is absolute endless possibilities!
- Riley, August 27th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
I absolutely hate white ceilings, but I am starting to feel that I am the only one. My friends all have the wost ceilings in their homes! Absolutely no touch of personality whatsoever. I try to convince them to put some details into it, but they say that they prefer the “traditional look”. just because it is plain white does not mean that it is traditional. There are so many things that they could do– even putting a tiny bit of color on the ceiling would make a world of a difference.

I never would have thought about putting paneling on the ceiling. Or crown molding for that matter. This website has changed my views forever! It has me thinking about what I want to do with every room in my house!
- Jenny, August 28th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
I just moved bought a new apartment in Boston (Go Red Sox!) and I am glad we have high ceilings. The previous owners had a ceiling medallion that was pretty bad looking – so we just ordered a new one that I think will suit me and my boyfriend a lot better.
- Casey, September 3rd, 2008 at 12:09 pm
I was going to get a ceiling medallion – but I am not sure about what size I should buy. Should I get big or small? The lighting fixture that I will be using with it is a chandelier. Does it matter what the height of the ceiling is? (10′) and what size room I have (I think it is about 12×14). HELP!
- Saya, September 3rd, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Saya,
I just called customer service about the same question. They told me that you take the area of the room, so 12×14 which equals 168. Then you devide that by 7 which equals 24″. You should use a ceiling medallion with a radius of around 24″
- Sarah, September 3rd, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Casey we get your question a lot. Our rule of thumb for the size of a medallion is the length of the room times the width of the room (in feet) divided by 7.
Medallion: Rule of thumb = [(Length x width) / 7]
For your example: (12 feet x 14 feet)/7 = 24 inches
A 24 inch medallion or bigger would be the right size.
When picking a medallion that will go above a chandelier or light fixture you need to conside the size of the fixture and pick a medallion that is either bigger or smaller than the fixture. You don’t want the medallion to be the same diameter as your fixture.
For example if you have a chandelier with a diameter of 24 inches pick a medallion that is 30 inches or 18 inches. Typically for higher ceilings you may decide to go bigger vs. smaller.
For really high ceilings such as a two story entry you can add a ceiling rim around the the medallion for an even grander feel.
Your smaller rooms you may also go larger with the ceiling medalliion making it the overall ceiling design for the space.
Hopefully, you can use this advice in making your decision. If you wish please give us a call 781-444-8001 so we can discuss your options. InvitingHome.com/Customer Care

Ceiling decor was a completely new concept to me before we moved into our apartment, but now i cannot even bear to stand the naked ceilings that my friends have! It looks completely strange!
- Clarissa, September 7th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Panel molding used on the ceiling creates such a subtle accent. And the material that is used for these moldings and ceiling medallions are so light and easy to install. I try to get my clients into this if they want a luxurious home without breaking the bank.
- Chad, September 15th, 2008 at 10:17 am
I love the idea of decorating my ceiling. I never even thought that I could actually DECORATE a ceiling before – I thought that was all for just walls. But this panel molding (which I have also just recently discovered is not JUST for walls) is fantastic. I am so excited. Now I have so many plans to fix up my house. I will positively love it, and I’m sure everyone who comes to visit will too. This is just so awesome!
- Bridget, September 23rd, 2008 at 9:49 am
I never realized that I could actually have my own dome in my house. I only thought they would be in fancy places like librarys or country clubs. I am truly excited that I can have this additional piece in my home.
- Phoebe, September 24th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
We have a lot of sloped ceilings and there honestly isn’t much that you can do with that kind of space (There’s no way you’d be able to hang any pictures). But my friend, who actually happens to be an interior designer, suggested that I use panel molding to accent that space. I took her advice and lo and behold I have a gorgeous space that I once thought was unusable. If anyone has run into this issue, I would look into it. It is such a vast improvement (and it’s also impressive – everyone will comment on it!)
- Beth, September 29th, 2008 at 11:34 am
I know what you mean Phoebe. My contractor put a dome in my entryway about a year ago and I LOVE IT. I had them pain a neo-classical mural in it and it looks fantastic! What did you have them put in your dome, or did you leave it white?!
- Jacqueline, September 30th, 2008 at 10:40 am
I decorated it of course! I had it painted a midnight blue and we have put holes into it with a back light above the dome so that it looks like stars are actually shining through it. It looks absolutely amazing!
- Phoebe, September 30th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
I think decorating a ceiling is so exciting. Not everything is just limited to walls now, and I love that. I love detail and so adding more detail to my ceilings is great!
- Anne, October 3rd, 2008 at 11:37 am
I went to visit a friend out of town and in her guest room there was paneling around where the headboard would have been. I was so impressed and she told me she got her molding here. I never would have thought that panel molding for the ceiling could work like that. It is so creative! (I just HAD to do something like that in my master bedroom – it looked so plain and now instead of buying a headboard, I can have something new!) Thanks for all the inspiration!
- Randi, October 17th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Phoebe, that is such a great idea! I have a 9 year old daughter who is obsessed with the stars right now. I think I will do something like that for christmas in her bedroom! Thanks for the idea!
- Chris, October 20th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Wow, I finally found people that share my passion for ceilings. I have invented a tool which allows one person to easily install anything overhead. At first I used it to install drywall panels. Tray ceilings, angled souffets, medallions, domes, and ceiling fans soon followed. Some pictures can be found on my web site liftalone.com Please e-mail with any comments or questions you may have.
- Mark, October 26th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Mark, that sounds so great! Very clever! I’ll have to check out your website right away!
- Molly, October 31st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I love how I put molding on the ceiling in my bedroom. It really adds to the room, that’s for sure! I have always hated plain and boring ceilings and now I have a way to decorate it. I am so glad that I have found people who know what I mean.
- Heather, November 4th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I really like the look that was created in the picture that coinsides with the article. It looks elegant and adds a really nice touch. Which molding was used for that look? I’m thinking it was the classic I, but I’m not sure. If anyone knows the answer to this question, I would really appreciate it! Thanks.
- Tammy, November 7th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I am an installer and I have to admit, this polyurethane molding, or whatever it is, is great. It is so easy to install and makes things a lot faster for me. I’m even finding myself being able to take more jobs because I can actually fit them in. It’s great.
- Lachlan, November 12th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I really think the ceiling decorations are beautiful. I will have to ask my husband to put it in my house for me!
- Sabah, November 13th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
I think it’s great that the panel molding used for ceilings are not limited to that, but can be used for walls as well. Me and my partner have decided to be creative and use different moldings in each room. Hopefully we don’t overwhelm ourselves!
- Pat, November 17th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Wow, adding this molding to my ceiling has made me feel like my house is so luxurious now. Not many people that I know have this and so it’s exciting that I get to be one of the first. I’m such a trendsetter
- Carissa, November 20th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I have to say that I am not a huge huge fan of ceiling decor in this way, but I really like the use of panel molding on the walls. It really defines the room. I suppose it would do the same thing on the ceiling, but I like having a nice crown molding instead. Maybe it’s just me. But I think this panel molding is very nice.
- Corinthia, November 21st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
We just recently added some panel molding to our ceiling and it really does add a lot to the room. I wonder if it has brought up the value of our house..
- Mark, November 26th, 2008 at 11:02 am
I was pretty skeptical about this whole molding on the ceiling thing, but my wife really wanted it so I did it while she was on vacation as a birthday present. Needless to say, I am no longer skeptical. And the look on my wife’s face was worth every penny. It really does add so much. Now we’re thinking about doing a few other rooms in the house as well.
- Bruce, December 4th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I like how the molding corners have a couple options for designs. My wife and I decided to make a double border around the ceiling, with the fancier corners on the outside. It’s a nice touch, and we are both really pleased with the outcome.
- Marco, December 9th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
I love the idea of decorating my ceiling. I have never really even thought about it until I was out of town visiting a friend I have not seen in a while. She had the molding on her ceiling and I was so impressed. I guess I never really thought about molding on the ceiling of a house.. only commercial areas I guess. I’m really excited for the project that is ahead of me. It will look great!
- Jennifer, December 17th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Who would have thought that a ceiling should be decorated? I never would have thought about it, until we visited my fiancee’s house and she had just put some panel molding up on her ceiling. Now my fiancee is thinking we should do something like that after we finally get the house we’ve been eying for a while. We’ll see. But it definitely looks good.
- Brian, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:42 pm
lol. I was just showing this to my fiancee and she pointed out a typing error. We went to my fiancee’s aunt’s house. Oops. Good thing she’s here to make it right. I guess I better get used to that, huh?
- Brian, December 24th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
lol. Brian – yeah, you better get used to it. My wife is “always” right. I run into that all the time, and I hate it when she really IS right. For example, she really wanted some panel molding for the ceiling. I thought it would look horrible. But, yet again, she was right. Our ceiling looks great. It really adds to the room.
- Eric, December 30th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Well of course your wife is always right! I’m joking of course. There are plenty of times when I am wrong, but my husband is smart not to point it out to me too much.
Anyway – I really wanted to leave a comment about how great I think panel molding is. Like everyone else, I think that it really adds to a room. It can also be used creatively to enhance specific parts of the room as well. Let your imagination run wild and see what you can come up with!
- Pami, January 2nd, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I thought it would be a complete pain to put these moldings into my house, but my wife insisted. It actually turned out to be relatively easy and it was almost even fun to do a project like that and see what we accomplished that weekend. Now we’re saving up to do crown moldings in our house.
- David, January 14th, 2009 at 11:48 am
I never knew that the stuff on the ceilings was called panel moldings. And I never really paid that much attention to it I guess. I realized that my mother’s house has this stuff all over the ceilings, and the walls too. I feel silly for never giving it a second thought, but now I appreciate the beauty of what was added to the house that I grew up in. Our house was luxurious and I never even knew it! I’m thinking about adding some molding to my own home and make it nice the way mine was while growing up. I think it would be a really nice touch.
- Tanya, January 20th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I never knew about panel molding either until I had my sister redesign my home. I am so thankful that we did this project together. She really brought a lot of insight and she totally figured out what I wanted and what would look great. Now I have a beautiful home. It’s great!
- Rachael, January 21st, 2009 at 1:21 pm
In the living room, my friend’s husband had used some very cool crown molding lined with a strand of lights to make a room look fabulous. It was easy and not too expensive but it looked very polished. I wanted the same type of thing but of course she would have known that I copied her idea and that is cheesy. I decided I would have to create something on my own. When I found this site, and I began looking around the site to see what I can use to make my living room come alive. It’s a beautiful and large space but I need something to bring it to life. I am currently contemplating a ceiling medallion or a corner carving – both very cool.
There are many things and looks to choose from and I must admit, all of them look very classy and distinctive. Good thing too because Martha Stewart, I am not. I need all the help I can get!

I never really paid attention to ceilings until we (me and my new husband!) just moved into our first home and we realized how boring our ceilings were, or rather, I realized. (Pete doesn’t really pay attention to little details like that). My friend suggested panel molding, and after doing a google search, I came across this delightful little website. After exploring everything (the inspiration gallery is exactly that – inspiring!) I discovered that there is so much that can be done to a ceiling. I am really excited to finally do something to our new home and make it look unique! Thank you for this opportunity (and the inspiration!)
- Amber, February 13th, 2009 at 10:53 am
I have been really bored with my house and have been thinking of what to do with it. I started poking around on the internet when I came across this website. I have discovered so many things that I never even noticed, much less knew it existed. I discovered panel molding and have realized that my ceiling the most boring part of the room! I have found a few decorative moldings and corners that can really make the ceiling stand out. I think it will look fantastic!
- Janet, March 11th, 2009 at 11:35 am
The most creative way I thought of decorating my ceiling was to make it a popcorn ceiling, haha now I am laughing at myself. I have been looking at the pictures you show and realize that all it is is molding! This adds so much decoration to the whole room, and dresses it up to actually change the personality of the room. I am definetly going this route instead! Thanks for showing so many great pictures, you don’t really get a sense unless you see it in a finished room!
- Jessica, April 15th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
So I decided to purchase a ceiling medallion from you. I got it in the mail within 3 days!! My Sister and I painted it with a gold finish, sort of like the one you have in the pictures. Well to my surprise I wouldn’t think that many people would take notice to it since it’s on the ceiling and all. Can I just say that on Mother’s Day we had company, and almost everyone who came that day immediately commented on how nice it looks. I can’t believe what a difference they can make. Thanks for the ideas too!
- Stacey, May 14th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I love the line: “Think of your ceiling as a sky” And I have decided to do just that. The ceiling is like an unpainted canvas, waiting to be made into something beautiful. I have been looking at your website for a while now and I think some trim is in order for my home. I am extremely excited about this project, and I can use my creativity to beautify my home. Thank you for the inspiration!
- Samantha, November 16th, 2010 at 11:50 am
I never really thought about molding on the ceiling until my wife saw it at a friend’s new home. Now she wants it too. I admit, I was hesitant but after visiting this website, I can see how the molding would really enhance the ceiling. I am especially a lot happier about it now that I know I don’t necessarily need a contractor. I’m a pretty handy person and I think this can be a great DIY project. Thanks for the info.
