Molding
New Beginnings with the Right Molding

Redecorating with molding gives you a chance to create new warmth and beauty in the home you originally fell in love with. To use molding with confidence, you’ll want to make design choices appropriate to your space and decor.
In some contemporary homes, for example, elaborate molding could be out of place. But don’t underestimate the amount of molding that rooms can tastefully accommodate. We offer a variety of beautiful moldings designed for contemporary homes. Clean lines, vivid profiles, and modern durable materials make our moldings a perfect fit for contemporary environment. Contemporary crown molding nz51 featured on the left-hand-side picture.
The architectural style of your home and your personal taste will a play large parts in selecting moldings. But there are other considerations that should guide your molding purchasing decision.
First of all, the size and scale of the molding should be appropriate for the room. Low ceilings (8 feet or less) have a harder time supporting large ornate crown moldings than 10- or 12- foot ceilings. The scale of the molding relates to its profile as well as molding size. For low ceilings we recommend choosing crown molding which projects on the ceiling more then it comes down on the wall. Application of such crown molding visually will make ceilings appear higher.
A small room can be easily overwhelmed by large, elaborate molding, just as a plane slender molding disappears in a large room. Deep and heavy molding detailing creates vivid shadows and has a greater visual presence than subtle molding profiles. As you consider adding a crown moldings in combination with other molding types, you might be concern that extensive trim-work will make small rooms appear even smaller. In fact, the opposite occurs. Through magic of geometric illusion, trim-work often makes room appear larger and wider. Long horizontal lines created with moldings can make you perceive that a room is longer and wider than it really is. In a same manner, long vertical lines created with moldings will make a low ceiling appear higher.

This article was very helpful. I was having a hard time choosing a molding! There are so many choices and possibilities that it was difficult, but now I know how to narrow my options down. Thank you!
- Andrea, October 31st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I love the fact that you offer so much molding on your website. Old world, Contemporary, Classic. It gives so much room for whatever we want. With that said, I never knew that with lower ceilings you were supposed to get moldings that are primarily on the ceiling as opposed to the wall! Go figure, it makes perfect sense!
- Herb, October 31st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I really the look that the molding in the picture has created… I think I may need to copy it. lol. It has given me some ideas, that’s for sure! Thank you.
- Jane, November 3rd, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I love the look of the contemporary molding. It adds such a bold statement to the room. Now that I have mine put up, I can’t even imagine not having it. EVERYroom should have molding, it adds such personality which you would not get otherwise! Its pricy up front but most definately worth it in the long run!
- Cynthia, November 4th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I really like the new art deco styles, however our home has a country feel to it so I can’t really implement those styles into it, can I? We have chosen to go the more ornate and decorative look, which looks nice too. It is definitely easy to find the right molding from this website – there are so many options available.
- James, November 4th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
I absolutely love the art deco feel that the contemporary molding brings into the room. It’s just so.. awesome! It makes the room feel more sophisticated and hip. Great ideas in this article too!
- Sammie, November 7th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
I am so glad that someone has finally said something about heights of ceilings and heights of molding. I have been driving myself crazy wondering if I’m picking the right molding or nto. Now I know that I was completely off and I should choose something shorter. Thank you!
- Leslie, November 10th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Moldings are great for the presentation of the room because it creates a sort of a frame– you wouldnt show a painting with no frame– why let anyone see a room with no molding?
- Joanne, November 12th, 2008 at 1:46 am
I know what you mean, Leslie. I’ve been having a hard time with it too. I’m so glad I went surfing on the internet and I found this place to help me. And the styles of molding they have to choose from is fantastic!
- Cadee, November 12th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I think Joanne and my wife have the same brain, because that’s pretty much what she told me when we moved into our new house. And she insisted about crown molding and other moldings as well. I never grew up with any of it, but I guess she did. Come to think of it, her parents house has molding. Well, now I do too.. and it really does make a huge difference.
- Wade, November 13th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Yeah, molding certainly adds a nice flair to the whole room. It is like the icing on the cake.
- Allen, November 17th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
I agree, I love molding.. You dont really notice that a room is that bare until you actually add molding to it. It adds so much personality and it makes it alot easier to decorate a room! I just added crown molding and panel molding to my living room. I love the panel molding because you can get away with not having any painting or pictures on the wall because there is already so much detail! LOVE IT
- Brenda, November 19th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
I know what you mean Brenda! I am a contractor and more and more customers are looking to add panel molding! You should try painting the wall UNDER the molding one color, then paint ABOVE the wall white or cream. It tooks amazing, believe me!
- Chris, November 19th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Yeah, I can see where you are coming from. We have a nice decorative chair rail in our house, but we have put up some nice black and white pictures in some really nice frames to offset the bare walls. It looks great and it really makes our house look that much luxurious. We love it.
- Robert, November 20th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I was having a hard time choosing the right molding for me. I’m glad that this was here to steer me in the right direction. There are so many options and I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Especially since I don’t really know that much about molding and I had no idea where to start. This has definitely helped me. Thanks!
- Allison, November 26th, 2008 at 10:42 am
We have outdone ourselves with molding in our house. My wife insisted on crown molding, chair rail molding and to top it all off, we even have some panel molding on the walls. I thought it would look so busy, but after putting it up, it really flows well together. I guess my wife really has a knack for this kind of thing. I really recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing something to their home.
- Martin, December 2nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Martin – your wife sounds a lot like mine. I wasn’t so sure about all of this molding nonsense. But after it was installed (mostly by me, mind you) I must admit it looks great. My wife proved that she was right – again. Man, I hate that! (Although if I had been right we would be stuck with an either bigger mess, wouldn’t I?)
- Joe, December 4th, 2008 at 11:59 am
It is so hard to choose a style of molding that I would like.. art deco? ornate? simple? SO many choices. I don’t even know where to start..
- Maureen, December 9th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I really like the new contemporary look. I’m looking to replace the ornate stuff that is already up and I’m really excited to see what I can do. There are so many possibilities and it would be great to really redo my home.
- Aaron, December 15th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
We have recently decided to go with a contemporary type of molding that also provides indirect lighting. It looks fantastic. We also just bought some baseboard that should go well with it. We’re waiting for its arrival so we can start the next step towards our remodeling project. We’re so please with the crown molding, and it will be exciting to see it finished with baseboard as well!
- Karen, December 17th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I love the contemporary items that you have on your website. Its so user friendly to see all over the contemporary molding grouped together on the website also. I cant tell you how many websites are out there that just put all their moldings in the same pages instead of simplifying everything. Props props
- Luther, December 23rd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
My wife and I have a classic home, so we have chosen some more traditional route. My house now looks so luxurious that I’m afraid of touching anything – like in a museum. I’m kidding of course, but it really does look great.
- Rudy, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I have always thought the traditional look was my thing. But lately I’ve been drawn to a more contemporary look. I think the moldings available are incredibly beautiful. Now I just have to choose what I like. Does anyone know if there are samples that I can look at?
- Martha, December 24th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
I am a big fan of an eclectic home. What I love about my rooms is that I have been able to take contemporary with the classical. I am a big fan of having the main part of the room be very sleek and modern and having the accents such as the molding be very ornate. Also, using colors contracted with black and white. So much beauty can come from not making specific decisions, but just letting multiple things to which you are drawn to into your space and into your life. not only will it make your room beautiful, it would also make you feel great due to what you like being around you.
- Linda, December 29th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
I have found that molding definitely makes a difference, and it can be hard choosing the right molding for the right room. I’m not really that big into some of the contemporary moldings, but the other more classic crown moldings are so lovely and beautiful. I think that I would have to say that some of the cove moldings are my favorites. Getting rid of those boring old corners and putting up some curved ones are so beautiful.
- Gracie, December 30th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
In the last paragraph of the article above, I could not help but agree. I made a large mistake of buying the wrong sized molding for my room, and we did not even really notice how short the room looked afterwards until after we had put up the molding. It was a costly mistake. I found out later that samples were available. I wish I had even thought of that before I purchased. but now the molding that I have installed now looks much nicer and I must say it was still worth all of it!
- Adanais, December 31st, 2008 at 10:33 am
We move around a lot. Probably about once every year or two. My wife gets excited when we move into a new home. It’s really her “thing” to decorate a new space. Of course she likes to start off with molding and paint and goes all out. It makes moving worth it for her I guess since we can at least build it up to a higher value. Why not? She gets the feel of the house and then she decides what she wants to do in terms of style. It’s a good thing we found this website. We’ve used it for the past two houses and she’ll most likely use this site again for this new house we’re going to be moving into next month. It’s like a new beginning every time.
- Perry, January 2nd, 2009 at 4:35 pm
I am such a sucker for crisp, white crown and base moldings, no matte what color the walls are they’re adorning!
Scrumptious and gives a beautiful, ornate look!

Fix this place up but it isn’t ours. Someday we will get the opportunity to fix up our own house. After watching these home improvement shows on TV, I love the details they put into these houses. Especially crown molding it brings detail into the home and gives it some personality. My house I used to own up in Rockford has this beautiful shelving piece go around the entire living room. We instantly fell in love with this house because of the crown molding, it also had corbels that brought accent to the edges by our doorway. I wish I could find the pictures of the dining room. There were two pillars that was between the living room and dining room. Most people who walked into our dining room was blown away by its beauty. When I had my baby shower, a couple of the guests had mentioned they would of never of known that the dining room had such personality.
I can’t express enough either how much value that crown molding can bring to a house. Watching too some of these shows that do flips on houses, the realtors that come in and discuss price of the house. Nine times out of ten the realtors make the comment that what made the house was the crown molding. So definitely look into it if your going to be redoing your house anytime soon, and definitely shop, look, touch, feel all that you can

My husband is more interested in the wood craving onlays for the front door and some carved moldings for the entrance to his den. He says they have some of the highest quality products in the market and they make it easy to get what you want by providing many ideas and points of discussion through their blog. And the key for me is that they try to use resources that are environment friendly

It’s no secret that this house is a work in progress for us. There’s so much we want to do: paint, finish furnishing the living and dining rooms, remodel the kitchen, put down laminate flooring. Finances are tight now, but once the siding is completed we are going to tackle the inside little by little. The first thing we need to work on is the living/dining area, since that’s the first thing you see when you walk into our home. We’ve been talking about installing crown molding in that space as well as our bedroom, we think it would look great with our textured walls and vaulted ceilings. Oh, and we want to resurface our cabinets and change the countertops. We need to extend the counter so that we have a more comfortable sitting area.

I can’t tell you how obsessed I am with crown molding. This site has so many different crown moldings to choose from, holy cow! I never realized there were so many different variations to choose from. No surprise there as I didn’t even know what crown molding or baseboard molding was until we moved into our current home. And even then, it took me another 2 years before I started really loving and appreciating the beauty that crown/baseboard moldings bring to a home. Now, I can’t ever imagine acquiring another home that doesn’t have crown molding (probably a major reason why I’m so crazy over older, historic homes that retain a lot of character). Wainscoting is something so new to me and a feature I’d like to add to our bathrooms – preferably on our own but I’m not too sure the husband is up for it. I tell you, some people salivate when they see their favorite designer clothes; I salivate when I see beautiful crown molding, wainscoting or baseboard moldings, I’m not kidding! Sigh. It amazes me how I was never into home details the way I am now. Maybe it’s because I came from the mountains back in Alaska and having had to live in igloos all my life… KIDDING.

Remodeling our home is very stressful. It has caused many arguments between me and my Hubby, which is quite rare. I want things done quickly and he has his own way of doing things. With his work schedule being so heavy, we are not able to be together often. One of the biggest things that aggravates me is when he takes it upon himself to shop for something important we need without me seeing it first. One time he bought paint and even painted the bathroom when I was out for the day. I about had a fit! After that fiasco he learned not to do anything that drastic ever again. When I showed him that we can buy home decor items online from InvitingHome.com it was a big relief for us both. Knowing that we can look at the products we need such as decorative hardware and lighting fixtures as well as learn the best way to use these items to accentuate the best parts our home.
Right now we’re working on a newly made wall that separates the master bedroom from our new den. We need to get some ideas on what type of crown molding to use. Since Hubby and I can’t agree on what looks better, this type of consultation can really help us. After looking through their Inspiration Gallery, I have some new ideas of what to do with the three rooms we’re working on, especially the den.

My favorite TV channel is HGTV. I love watching shows about fixing up houses. Maybe it’s because ours needs to be redone badly. Since my husband just transfered to NY, we’re going to have to sell this house that we’re living in. I’ve watched this show on HGTV called “Designed to Sell” and it has given me quite a few ideas. Adding these moldings will definitely help bring up the cost of our house, and it’s pretty affordable. I’m almost wishing we could still love here with all of this new decorating. Maybe it will give me ideas about the new house in the process!
- Diane, January 14th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I love HGTV too. I just started getting this other channel.. the Green Channel I think it is. Tom Green has a game show on that channel.. and Bill Nye the Science Guy is coming back too. Crazy. But what I really meant to say before all of that rambling, is that all of these polyurethane moldings are eco-friendly, which is great. I’m starting to get more and more environmentally friendly and seeing items that can be purchased at a reasonable price really makes my day.
- Tony, January 19th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
I love HGTV! It’s one of my favorite networks! They have so many excellent ideas. I think the articles and inspiration gallery on this website is great too. There are so many amazing ideas! And the molding that is available is fantastic! So many style choices to choose from! I love it!

I just wanted to let you know that I received my first purchase from your company today and I am very pleased. I found “Inviting Home” on the internet while I was looking for some crown molding for my small dining room. I had been to a few DIY stores in our area and did not like the quality I found there.
The parcel arrived today and I am very happy with the quality of your product and the speedy service I received. I am looking forward to doing more business with you in the future.
Thank you!

One thing that I have noticed in some of these apartments in Oslo is beautiful and unique touches that most places don’t have. They have this beautiful crown molding and corbels around the ceiling and it is so fancy-schmancy and nice looking.
I love extra touches in the home, especially here in Norway since most people live in apartments which are a little small (at least compared to the track homes I’m used to being around in Southern California). Its not bad at all, Im just saying its nice to see these extra details. They add a lot!
If your looking for some insperation for adding some nice touches like crown molding to your home or apartment, you can check out invitinghome.com. They have so many amazing ideas to add architectural details to your home. You can find the right insperation there.
This website is cool too because it is not only for the regular person who wants to spruce up their living areas, but it is also for professionals. Like if you are a designer or a contractor you can find great supplies and ideas here also. They have tons of decorating ideas and advice on how to add that extra design touch to make any project or job perfect.

When I was a little girl, it was my dream to be an interior designer. That dream has never quite gone away, I don’t think it ever will. I used to sit with notebook paper and design rooms. I know, it sounds a little strange, but it was a small hobby. I used to keep them in a notebook, which has since been lost. Now that I’m grown up, I still do something similar to this, but rather than using notebook paper, I use the internet. There are some websites that are amazing for this very thing, sites like InvitingHome.com.
InvitingHome.com specializes in crown molding and decorative architectural hardward, such as corbels. They also sell mirrors, lighting, knobs and pulls, furniture, shutters, etc. This site is a dream site for the interior decorator I’ve always dreamed of being, so I spend a lot of time look at it, putting rooms together. I love crown molding! My aunt, who has always had a knack with decor, used to live in a dutch farm house on a dairy in California and all her ceilings were embellished with crown molding. I could sit and look at it for hours!

Sometimes we have to face realities that strike deep into our pride. For me, such an instance came a few months back after Julie and I had purchased out first home and were going through the trails and tribulations of painting the first floor. I can say that I found out first hand that I have absolutely no talent when it comes to painting and when we were done, well, let’s just say the corners where the walls meet the ceiling were and are just pitiful. After taking some measurements and having a good laugh at ourselves, Julie and I decided that we would put up crown molding. This serves two purposes for us; first, the smeared paint issue gets resolves and second, the molding will add some flair and more importantly, some added value, into our home.

A couple weeks ago Dearest entered a contest to win $20,000. The theme of the contest was designing the perfect room in your dream house from top to bottom. Of course he designed his perfect room not mine because mine has wall to wall bookcases. His was more about the wide screen TV and leather, massaging chair. To win you had to plan out the room in every detail, flooring to ceiling what you would do. Which meant he spent a few hours at InvitingHome.com making a list of everything he would use. His dream room had a little mini kitchen set up, just to house his snacks and beer. And it was sweet too, marble counter tops with cherry cabinets, and even decorative corbels added on to look extra fancy. He even planned out floral crown molding to go around the tops of the walls. He really throw himself into it.
Even if he doesn’t win he’s now added InvitingHome to his list of favorite sites to dig through and make wish lists from.
- Summer, February 6th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
That sounds like a cool contest! Hmm… a dream room… I’d probably put in some indirect lighting, with a nice HD TV with surround sound so that I can even hear the birds chirping in the background of my favorite movies, and I would also put a beautiful fireplace with a gorgeous marble mantle, with some panel molding and chair rail molding too.. it’s all about luxury for me!

We were really excited when we bought our first house. We could finally decorate it without the landlords or property managers of our old apartments getting upset. We are finally making the steps at getting some nice molding put into our house, and we’ve finally made a decision on the florence cove molding for our living room, and we’re still deciding on the rest of the house. We plan on putting molding everywhere, even the bathroom (we were really happy when we found out that the molding was moisture resiliant). This website is truly making our dreams come true.
- Thomas, February 13th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
We just redid our house and we finally decided to add some molding to the room. It gave more character to the room than I could have hoped for. I am so glad we decided to make our house look like a whole new place. I love having people come over so I can show off how beautiful it all looks.
- Billie Jean, March 6th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
We’ve decided to update our kitchen in the past year, and a friend suggested to us that we try panel molding for a new look. Well can I just tell you I’m so glad to have found the Gardena panel molding! It makes our kitchen feel so different than before almost brand new! Who would have thought that a piece of wood could add so much personality to a room!
- Carla, March 16th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Your article has definetly changed my persepctive about crown molding. Just as it says I always assumed that the crown molding would make a room appear smaller. I’ve always thought this beacause the molding takes up some of the wall space making the walls appear shorter. The last thing my small NYC apartment needs is anything that will make it look smaller. Well finally getting to my point, I put your knowledge to the test and I ordered from your site the Ventura cove molding and it just opens up my living space so much I couldn’t even believe it! I’m encouraging all my friends in the city to get crown molding!
