Defining Your Kitchen Style

There are a lot of different kitchen styles, and choosing one that suits you best can seem like a difficult task. You have to think about the fact that you will be the one who has to live with the design so you must think of it as something that makes you happy and comfortable to live in. While you might like to bring the style that you see in a magazine, do not let it lead your design more than your own desires. Let your tastes, desires, favorite textures, and favorite colors direct your kitchen design.
Don’t rely on trends or gimmicks when considering your kitchen design because it is easy to fall out of love with something like that. You should consider what you are attracted to and what you would find a comforting space to cook in, to eat it, and to live in. How would you like to feel when you walk into the kitchen?
Look at the architectural details in your house and see what direction in which they are heading. Looking at it, you might be able to decide the style you would be able to concentrate on. Would you classify it as something Victorian? Contemporary? Colonial? If the architecture doesn’t seem to tell you much, then you will have to think of how to incorporate one of the styles to make it look great with. You may also think of a different place of inspiration. One of them could be thinking of an art piece that really inspires you and going along with the particular style of the painting. If your house has a kitchen that is designed to be adjacent with another room, you must think of how the kitchen will transition into the other room. You could consider combining the two rooms style-wise, but of course if you do not want it to be too similar, then you could use common objects or certain similar colors to tie the two rooms together.

We had a disaster kitchen situation when we first moved into our home. The couple that was living there before us decided to have it be the most unattractive kitchen that i have ever seen in my life. The walls were a red brick color and all of the cabinetry was black. The ceiling was tilled with mirrors. I wondered who could possibly like that ugly kitchen replicated once more in the mirrors! It looked like some dark cult lived there before. We had to re-do the whole thing, but i am really happy the way it turned out now. I think we had to do everything short of an exorcism.

I never realized how much work actually goes into completing a kitchen. With all of the choices and all of the different possibilities. With so many choices, everything adds up to so many combinations! It probably the most difficult room in the house to decorate.

I was surfing the internet for some interesting drawer handles and knobs when I cam across this site. I found the most charming knobs that have a starfish on them that goes perfectly in the beach themed bathroom, and the georgia beach knobs and pulls go great with my southern charm kitchen. They pulled everything together and I am so pleased with how my kitchen has turned out.
- Janet, August 26th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I have been looking all over the internet for ways to choose a kitchen style. I have been trying so hard to pick something, but I think the most helpful hint that I have gotten so far is to be able to combine all of the different ideas that I could have. I was thinking of a modern kitchen, but after traveling last summer I got these amazing African hand-made masks– so then I thought about having a more earthy kitchen. After reading a few articles, including this one I realized that I do not have to settle for any particular design. I have paired these amazing clean lines of the interior and most of the surroundings, but the details with the masks are so great and bring an organic feeling into the kitchen.
- Ilana, August 28th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Tell me about it! We are trying to figure out the style of our kitchen for 30 years now. Finally getting all the stuff together! They say that kitchen “sells the house”, I hope it’s true… because we are planning on spending a lot of money. Love the carvings for the kitchen cabinets and caved door panels- definitely will use it in our kitchen.
- Jordan, August 29th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I agree with Ilana. I don’t think anything necessarily has to have a theme. I think that what looks good together, should go together. Why have just ONE style? As long as things match (at least a little bit!) and as long as they look good together, then I think it should be okay. Afterall – it is YOUR kitchen.

I am thinking about remodeling my kitchen, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. My family room, which is right off the kitchen is shades of green. And my Formal Dining room, which is obviously off the kitchen as well is cream colored. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas what color I should do my new Granite tops? And what color for the walls?
- Eugene, September 3rd, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Well, In my opinion, granite should be kept the darker gray color– it will match any decor, and will have a trendy and traditional effect on the overall look of the room. Then you can just chose whatever wall color you like. The kitchen colors are important though, because you have to think about which colors are going to impact the kitchen in a positive way.
- Caitlyn, September 5th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I think that kitchen is the best place to get creative with your style because if you like a more conservative home, it is a great place to just let loose and let our your fantasies. It is the best place to, for example, have a very minimalistic and modern space if you would like to keep the rest of your home a more traditional style. Or you could have a country kitchen, while still having a modern or art deco home.
- LeeAnne, September 7th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I think adding a rosette to the front of each cabinet would be cute, but my fiancee thinks we should put the rosettes above the cabinets. What should I do??
- Andrea, September 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am
My husband and I built a log home several years ago and have now decided to revamp our kitchen. We decided to go with the Cones & Boughs Knob in Antique Pewter. The knob gives the kitchen even more of a woodsy feel and I love it! There are so many beautifully crafted knobs on this website, I’m thinking of ways to replace all of my other knobs and handles in the house!
- Cindy, September 10th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Andrea – I think you should put them ON your cabinets. If they are above your cabinets, I don’t think they would be so visable.
- LeAnne, September 16th, 2008 at 9:56 am
I’m not sure if I even have a kitchen style. Maybe I should just call it the “Grace” Style. lol. I like both bold colors and I like classic features so it’s like a classical contemporary style? Eh, anwyays. I’m thinking about changing it to match the rest of the house, but we’ll see.
- Grace, September 26th, 2008 at 10:51 am
I think that I like the classic country feel the best. I love history and so having a kitchen reflect what I love is important to me. I have subtle details like small rosettes that are a part of my decor. It’s such a nice and homey place. Perfect for when my sisters come over with their families for the holidays. The kitchen is pretty much where we all migrate to anyway!
- Meg, September 29th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Grace! Don’t change it! Your kitchen should say something about YOU! Plus, I think that your kitchen sounds very interesting! And as long as it doesn’t CLASH with the rest of the house, I personally think you should be fine.
- Monica, October 3rd, 2008 at 9:17 am
I don’t know where any of you live, but I live in the Napa Valley. And of course I’ve chosen a grape theme. This site has great grape wood carvings and grape onlays that are available. And they really did add a lot when they were added into our kitchen’s theme about six months ago. I recommend looking around on this site and seeing what kind of items you like and then just go with it. I mean, your kitchen should reflect yourself afterall!
- Martunia, October 17th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
I spend a lot of time in my kitchen baking for my pie business. So I of course need my kitchen to be spectacular, since I spend so much time in it baking. I have stenciled and painted some cute strawberries and other fruits onto the wall and I also have ordered these really cute knobs on this site. They have stawberries, pears and grapes on them, which ties in the country fruit theme well. I love it!
- June, October 23rd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I know what you mean! I love al the decorative knobs, they are so cool. I just bought these leave knobs and pulls for my parents who live in Michigan. They love the outdoors, So I just know they are going to love these!
- Sally, October 31st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
I think the knobs and pulls are lovely as well. For being so small, they sure do add a lot to the kitchen!
- Mabel, November 12th, 2008 at 11:16 am
II’m not sure what my style is exactly, but I definitely love rustic country kitchens. It’s just so homey. I have to agree. I fell in love with the pulls and the knobs too. I have to save up a little more money to order the ones that I want, but I can’t wait.
- Daisy, November 13th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
My fiancee and I are thinking about building a house and defining what “style” we might want has been tough. I think it’ll work out in the end (I hope) and we’ll probably just make up our own unique style. Whatever suits us I guess. It’ll be exciting however we do it.
- Matt, November 17th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
We have a classic spanish style kitchen. I guess I’m keeping my roots with me. My wife is from the states and I am from Puerto Rico, but she loves the spanish style just as much as me. It reminds me of home.
- Johanny, November 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
I know what you mean Johanny. I grew up in the states, but my mother was Puerto Rican and we grew up with a lot of spanish flair in our home. Your note makes me miss my mother’s homemade chicken asopao. Thank you for the memories.
- Jorge, November 26th, 2008 at 10:30 am
I would love to see the kitchens that the two of you have. As for me, I don’t really have a style per se. I guess you could call it “the style of Amy”. lol. It really doesn’t have a particular flair, or at least not that I can think of, but in all honesty, who knows, right? My personality could take after a certain style for all I know. But I do think that themed/styled kitchens are fantastic whenever I visit one.
- Amy, December 2nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I never really thought about what style our kitchen has… but I guess it would be a nice country kitchen. It’s pretty open, and pretty big, which is perfect, since we are the ones who end up hosting all of the family gatherings. (You would think that once the kids move out of the house things would be done at one of their houses for once!) We have updated our kitchen over the years and I think we’re both pretty pleased at how it has worked out. We have just recently put in a granite countertop and put some nicely flourished corbels underneath to support it, and we have recently found a few onlays on this site to add some little touches here and there. It has really come together. I know my wife is happy, and that’s what really counts, right?
- Gary, December 4th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Yeah, we have done a lot of remodeling as well. So it is really hard to define our style. I think we’ve taken a little piece of every style possible! lol. I guess our kitchen could be considered a “melting pot” of kitchen styles.
- Debbie, December 9th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I’m on a new edge sort of kick. Everything in my house is made of classic shapes. Circles, squares, even triangles.. I guess all of my geometric favorites. I really like the sharp features that come with the design. And I used colors that really offset each other, like black, white and red. It really added a lot of character.
- Michelle, December 15th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
We recently purchased a beautiful victorian home. With it came an extremely outdated kitchen. We’ve been fixing it up though, and we’ve been trying to hold on to the victorian style of the kitchen. It’s coming along quite nicely and whenever I have my ladies group over, we love to sit in the kitchen and hold our meetings in there.
- Beverly, December 17th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I bet that Victorian kitchen is beautiful. I like seeing the different styles that people take into their homes. It can even be inspriring sometimes.
- Bruce, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I have never been happy with my kitchen. Luckily we’ll be renovating it next spring, so I won’t have to be annoyed with it anymore. Our current kitchen feels like I’ve walked through a time warp and have revisited the 70s. We’re still working out the details of what we want, but anything will be better than what we have right now. (Tan tile around the whole room with some of them decorated with corn and other vegetables… gag me!)
- Claudia, December 24th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
As much as i love my apartment, my kitchen is that space that I have not yet been able to make my own mark and make it look like something that is mine. somehow it is much easier to do in all of the other rooms. Due to it being an apartment and not a house i do not have a very spacious kitchen, which means that to make it look like something that has a personality I have to find dishware and appliances that would look a bit more eccentric which makes it a bit more pricey. Using trinkets to decorate is a bit unreasonable due to the fact that there is no space to put them. I painted the walls and such, but it still looks quite generic. Molding might just be the perfect thing to fix my problem. Then it will stop being so bland.
- Terry, December 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I know exactly where you’re coming from Terry, my kitchen is extremely small too. I can’t wait until I have my own house someday. But until that time comes, I will have to deal with what I have. I have personally given my kitchen at least a little color by putting up the red-jeweled knobs from this website. It’s a little splash of color that helps create at least a little bit of a personality. I also have a little red dish that sits in the corner by my sink that I keep little soaps in. It matches the red knobs and it brings out a little something else. Molding sounds like a good idea too, although I personally rent, so I can’t do any little additions like that.
- Heather, December 30th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I used to have that problem, but that was a long time ago. I ended up asking my apartment building manager if I could change things and make some home improvements and he let me. It doesn’t hurt to ask to make your living space that much nicer.
- Aleksey, December 31st, 2008 at 10:09 am
I have a modern kitchen. I make homemade pies that I sell at the Farmer’s Markets in the summer and I sell at local stores in the winter, so I needed lots of space. I even have two large ovens! Needless to say, I had to have a pretty open kitchen to deal with all of these pies. But it also has a country feel to it. I guess the style doesn’t really matter as long as it flows well, right?
- June, January 2nd, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Before I went to the link that is included in this article, I really didn’t have any kind of clue what style my kitchen is. I guess my kitchen looks closest like the shaker style. It’s simple, yet has a lot of personality to it. I know that we like it.
- Nina, January 5th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
I have a modern style too. I love it. It’s clean and chic.
- Jessica, January 7th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
See, there are different types of modern style though. A lot of people think that if it looks the same, but if the quality is not great then there is really no point. There is a great deal of difference of something that you could have gotten from Ikea as opposed to a more high-end product that could easily be found on this web-site.
- Laura, January 9th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
I remember when we were in our old house; my hubby and I installed new kitchen cabinets. We had to change the old ones because they were really getting old. After we put in the new cabinets, our kitchen looked really nice. But a few months after we finished our kitchen project, we had to sell our house because my hubby got a new job. We didn’t even have the chance to install the crown molding. Now, we have purchased a new house and even though the cabinets are new and look pretty nice, I want to improve the look of our kitchen by installing some nice crown molding above our kitchen cabinets. I was browsing around the internet and found this website. I was so impressed with their products. Their prices are very affordable, and they even carry beautifully designed corbels. I am looking forward to beautifying my home. I have to show my hubby this website and the nice stuff that they have. I would like to show him the crown molding that I want to purchase.

We have owned our home for a week now and of course we are discussing ways to decorate our house to make it our own. Since JJ nor I really have any interior decorating knowledge I have turned to InvitingHome.com for some inspiration. I really like this website because the ideas are things I would actually do, unlike the magazines we looked at from the library where those magazines are focused on very eccentric ideas or designs that would only fit a millionaires budget. JJ wants our first project to be new kitchen cabinets. I think overall our home looks very modern for a house that was built in the 1930’s except for those kitchen cabinets which were probably built in the 30’s as well. As you can see from the picture on the left there is not a whole lot of counter space. I like a lot of counter space because I make a lot of our meals from scratch. InvitingHome.com gives a lot of great ideas for updating your kitchen to fit your lifestyle. A kitchen makeover sounds like it would be expensive so I would like to start off with something more in our affordability range. Painting the walls. All of our walls are white and I would love to bring a feeling of warmth and expression into our home and I feel that the best way to do this through colour. JJ and I both love the idea of having crown molding in the center of the wall and two different colours on either side like the picture on the right from this site. The website has a really beautiful selection of crown molding that you buy from them including environmentally friendly moldings.I am excited to decorate now but we probably wont do anything until the new year.
- melissa, January 9th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
I think it would be a lot of fun to give my house a “makeover”. Although doing all of the work.. I’m not so sure about it. It’s a good thing that these polyurethane moldings are so light-weight. It should make the process a lot easier I would think.
- Sandra, January 13th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
My style. How can I describe it? Out of this world, maybe? lol. I admit it. I am very eccentric. I have all sorts of little gadgets and gizmos in my kitchen, not to mention all over the house. I think it is important to make whatever space you live in enjoyable for you, first and foremost.
- Jamie, January 14th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
We have modern kitchen – thank god my girlfriend and I have the same taste. It makes it a lot easier. Wide open spaces with sleek lines. That is our style. Stainless steel, the whole nine yards. It works for us.
- Tyler, January 19th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
I am in love in love in love with the country style. It reminds me of the country and that’s where I grew up – in the country. I have so many memories that are involved in the kitchen itself, and that seems to be the place where every one gravitates to when we have our family functions. I think open and inviting kitchens are so great.
- Molly, January 22nd, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I have decided that my house needs a “face lift”. Seriously, it does need a lot of work.. and the style that it currently has is just so.. blah. I’ve decided to completely redecorate my home. New paint, new molding, new furniture, everything! I am so excited. And I know just where to start! The Kitchen! New appliances, new cabinets, and I saw some absolutely gorgeous kitchen hardware on this site that I will need to take full advantage of. I am really thrilled.
- Norma, February 10th, 2009 at 10:52 am
I think the advice in this blog is dead-on. We were going with a trendy look that was popular at the time and now we are regretting it. We did exactly what this blog predicted. We fell out of love with the style. We’ve decided to save up some money and design a whole new kitchen that we are really excited about. This article was very helpful and we’ll reference it during our decision making process. I didn’t realize there were so many classifications to make it a certain style. The link above was very helpful as well.
- Andrew, February 13th, 2009 at 11:26 am
My partner and I have been designing our dream home for a couple years now, and we are finally almost done building it. While designing, we decided we liked the country style’s feel and look, and so we tried designing our kitchen based on those ideas. We could not be more pleased with how things are working out for us. We have actually used many materials from this company, and will continue as we finish building the house of our dreams.
- Lucy, March 6th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
My wife and I have been trying to design a kitchen that suites both of our tastes and needs for a couple months now and it has been a trying situation. We’ve decided that compromising is the best west to go and we’ve been trying to match colors and styles so that they work well together (much like our marriage). We’re slowly getting there. but researching this whole thing has been very helpful to both of us. This article in particular was great.
- Matt, March 16th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
About 3 months ago we purchased new stainless steel appliances for our kitchen. I love my kitchen decor, but it just doesnt seem to flow with the shiny new additions to our kitchen. After reading about defining a style I realize that adding certain types of wood and colors to the walls can help it all come together. I loved the article, and most of the pictures show the styles with the stainless. This has definetly helped me get a much better idea of how we can make our style come out.
- Monica, March 17th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
so when we moved into our home, we decided that kitchen remodeling was a must because of the obviously dated 80s kitchen. it was one of those one-thing-led to another things and slowly but surely the kitchen remodeling got completely forgotten. your website revitalized my passion of wanting to beautify our kitchen. It is an exciting thing to finally get back on the bandwagon with!
- Kathleen, June 24th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
I like this article. It is nice and helpful for kitchen design.
- Bea, October 20th, 2010 at 1:11 pm
My home is definitely a country home. And I take pride in my country style kitchen. It has a classic beauty and a certain charm to it. I will stay in this house until the day I die. And I will pass it on to my children. I love my home!
- Pat, October 29th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
I’m a novice when it comes to home design. My wife and I are looking to purchase a new home. We are not building, but instead will be buying. Learning about the different styles has been helpful with the searching process (country kitchen vs. modern, etc).
- Andrew, December 23rd, 2010 at 1:05 pm
