This was so helpful! I have always had trouble with colors, and it really makes sense to see what colors I am drawn to. And you’re right. All those little accessories can say so much.

Accessorize accessorize accessorize! The accessories are the things that define that home as YOURS. It adds so much personality without even doing too much. This article is fabulous and I am so excited to see someone have the same kind of view/opinion as me!

This was great! Very helpful! Little things add little accents to the home. Even those subtle touches. It’s great!

I love the way different shades of colors look together. For instance, by bedroom is different shades of wine, black and white. Everything in the room es either a shade of wine, stark black, or vibrant white. These colors look so good together and when you finally have a theme for a room you just have to run with it. There is nothing in the room that is out of place. I just love how much fun colors can be!

I guess you could say my home has a lot of personality to it. My wife collects so much stuff. I wouldn’t call it clutter, but there are little music boxes everywhere. My wife collects them. She also collects those little collectable spoons. Luckily the spoons are a great decorative feature in our kitchen, and the music boxes really are beautiful. It really does add a lot though.
- Ken, December 4th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Ken, I feel for ya man. I hate clutter, especially if its little collectables like spoons and music moxes. Yuckk! Haha (no offense to your wife) But at least you have a theme in those rooms i suppose! Hang in there!

Ugh. I know what you mean. Isn’t it normally the woman who loves all the little things that clutter a home? Oh no – in this case it’s my husband. He happens to collect anything that can be collected. Spoons, shotglasses, you name it, we’ve got it. I must admit I have gotten a little used to them. And if they have to be around, I try to at least incorperate them into the room so it doesn’t look like “stuff”. But I am also in agreement with Sara. Accessorizing is great, but it just depends on those accessories I guess, lol.

I completely agree with this article. Accessories are important in a home. It adds the character and essence of “you”. Why would anyone want to put items in their house that are not a reflection of themselves? Accessories add the personality to a home.

I can find a lot of truth in this blog entry, along with everyone else (although I’m not so sure about those spoons, I have to admit). Items that show a side to personality are very important to those who live in that home. It is a peice of their life. Who doesn’t want to be surrounded by things that remind them of a time when they were younger, or of a family vacation that was really special to them. Plus, when people come to visit and ask about it, they tend to make a great story too.
- Michael, December 17th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Elizabeth, that is so funny that its your husband that collects those things. I think you need to make him get rid of the collections.. its just “stuff.” Stuff that you dont need cluttering up the place. In my opinion, you can’t incorporate that type of stuff into any decor. It always ends up looking like just “stuff.” stuff stuff stuff, and in case i didnt say stuff enough, STUFF! haha

I’m more of a “simple is better” guy myself. The less there is, the more I like it.

I think my computer messed up, so if this shows up twice, I’m sorry. I just wanted to share that I have a very exuberant personality, so how can I decorate without showing my own personality. You can tell a lot about a person when you visit them and see what their home is like… it’s all about the accessories!

I completely agree with everything that was said in this blog. Seriously, accessories are what makes a place unique. There is not one place in the world that has all of the same accessories as another place. Every home is unique in it’s own way, and it is all because of the accessories. The items that are put into the house is what makes that place so special.

My wife has put plenty of spirit in our house. It’s like our house puked up crafty stuff from craft fairs all over our state. It doesn’t look bad necessarily, but it’s starting to get a little crowded.
- Ronald, December 31st, 2008 at 2:43 pm
ha ha. I know what you mean! My mother is the same way. A little bit has passed on down to me, but I’m at least extremely organized when it comes to that kind of stuff. I just like to create a country-cozy atmosphere. And everyone always compliments me on it, so I must be doing something right!

I have always based my home decor decisions on an inspiration that I got from my aunt. My whole life I have remembered her looking amazing every day. Even when she was already in her 60s, many people couldn’t believe what she looked like. I remember one day I was at a store with her and two women walked by and we heard them say “what could her secret possibly be?” and my aunt said, “it’s all in the accessories”. That has always stayed with me. It is an amazing thing to realize because no matter how many things you may put into the apartment, if you do not put the accessories in, it will be just an apartment– not YOUR apartment. It is the same thing as jewelry adding a bit of a sparkle to a dress.

that’s great! i know that i sometimes wonder about how absolutely amazing many women look at their age– but same thing with the older homes and the older rooms– they can look younger and more beautiful. I love re-thinking my decor because it will make the whole house look completely different then what it is every day. I guess while there is such thing as to many accessories, it doe not mean that your whole house has to look completely sterile. there is a balance and it is a lot of different ways to reach that particular balance. I love how easy it is to change things up.

Accessories are fine, in moderation. I hate going to places that are so cluttered with crazy little knick knacks. It drives me up the wall. Can you tell I’m more of a contemporary kind of guy? I like simplicity. Too much clutter makes everything else hectic. But it is the RIGHT accessories that really matter. Picture frames and a few things here and there are one thing. Bookshelves that are not filled with books is completely different.
- Mike, January 14th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
I completely know what you mean Mike. I grew up and my mother is seriously a huge pack rat. We had so much stuff all over the place.. all of these little things that came from one trip or another. Each one definitely could start her on a tangent of stories though, let me tell you. I like to be the exact opposite. I like simple things. I like it clean and clutter free and free of “stuff”.
- Sophia, January 20th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Accessories are a great addition to any room though. Seriously. How else will the room have any personality that is reflected by the people who inhabit that space. I think that having accessories completes the home and makes it that much more beautiful.

I have been mildly obsessed on decorating our home. Take note that I’ve said decorating and not RE-decorating because it has never been decorated since we moved last August

I think accessories add a great touch to a room. In my living room, my roommates and I have decorated it by hanging some shelves around our framed picture of “Starry Night” (my favorite painting) and on the shelves we have put some candles, along with some wooden figurines that look like they could have come from Africa. We also have a bamboo plant to add some color. Our coffee table has a large metal dish (about 24″ wide) and we put some nice decorative stones (medium and small for some variety) and we have placed some white and dark grey candles in the center of it. It adds so much to the room and it really does make the place feel like home. I think that it looks great and I know that I love to come home and relax in there after a long day at work!

I believe it’s the little details that make the home. The accents throughout a house that really define who a person is. I’ve come to realize that colors in each room are soo important, and when everythig including the accessories comes together it’s just such a great feeling to know that the room is finally complete, and tells a little bit about who I am!

With the holdiays coming up now is a great time to add some accessoires. Candle sconces and hurricane lamps look great on your table or mantel and add a touch of elegance to your home decor.

I have several gold leaf tables, waste baskets and small mirrors made by “Decorative Craft” Florentina, made in Italy that I purchased in 1964 and they are still beautiful. Thanks for making my home special.
