Corbels
Shopping for Corbels

Design professionals have taken all the guesswork out of the shopping experience for home owners, who have long been frustrated by confusing home-improvement advice and misleading information from less reputable sources. By providing sound advice and unbiased information in a straightforward format, consumers can feel confident when beginning their shopping for a particular historical architectural element that has seen an increase in present day popularity: the corbel.
“Arming yourself with knowledge before you buy corbels, or before you purchase any item or service, is more than just an intelligent choice. It is an absolutely critical course of action for any consumer to take before making a decision,” design professionals say. And although the internet is known for its innumerable resources and information, finding information that is unbiased and sound can be a challenge. This is a relevant issue when a conflict of interest arises.
“The real motivation behind the InvitingHome.com website is to provide the public with an authentic resource for home improvement and design projects. By presenting information in an easy to read format, and providing inspiration through innovative ideas, we support the consumer through the decision making process,” explains one designer.
The rising popularity of carved wood corbels is what prompted the release of the design group’s newest article: Corbels: Six Things to Know Before You Buy. In it, consumers will find indispensable advice on deciding which style of corbel best suits their decor and determining the correct size for the corbel based upon its intended purpose. Also included, is a primer on what materials corbels are often made from, as well as an explanation of the differences between machine carved corbels and hand carved corbels. And additionally, a description of wood varieties a consumer might choose from, based upon their intended project.

Me and my husband have remodeled our basement, complete with an old-fashioned bar. We used the wood corbels to support the counter top and it looks completely authentic. The fact that we could stain it what we wanted right after arrival was fantastic as well. I highly recommend anyone to order their corbels from this site.

When we were remodeling our kitchen we decided to get a granite counter top. We have never even heard of corbels and about a week before the crew came to install it, they asked asked us if we have purchased the corbels. We were in shock. We didn’t know what size to buy or where to look. Luckily we found this article that made everything so easy and we got the corbels just in time. I am still surprised at how lucky we were to have everything work out so easily.

I ran into a similar situation as John. I am surprised that people do not tell their clients this when they order heavy countertops. Thank God for this site because they shipped it out to us and we got them in only three days!

I completely agree! it is like we are supposed to guess… almost cuts out the need for professinals since we have to continuously figure things out on our own. I looked everywhere to find the right corbels for my home. Half of the corbels that I was finding were absolute awful quality… the other corbels were either too plain or had designs that are absolutely insane and unattractive designs. This website is good quality and beautiful designs.

I make it a point to prepare my customers for the installation of their counter tops. Some carpenters just underestimate the idea that people love for things to be functional as well as attractive- they just tend to focus on the function and forget the fact that people need time to find something that suits their decor and their taste.

Corbels are the most perfect way to enhance the appearance of the room. They are by far my favorite thing for when I am helping with houses. They are a great support element and the ones on this web-site are the best that I have seen- they are sound as well as fitting the different preferences of my customers.

I already posted a response on the ceiling decor page, but wanted to say a little something about corbels as well! I just installed corbels on my front porch on each side of the posts. It looks great! All my friends love the new change and said they will be visiting your site very soon!
- Trevor, August 27th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
I like all of the options of corbels. There are ornate ones, really plain and simple ones, and all of those in between - which is great for people who can’t make up their minds!
- Matt, August 28th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I was looking through corbels for my kitchen when I cam across a wood bracket that has a hole in it to hold a drapery rod. How clever! Now I can add a whole new detail to my windows!

Thank you Invitinghome.com for helping us pick just the right corbel. Working together we choise the R57 large corbels in cherry. With a counter overhang of 10 inches we could have gone with the medium but we wanted something more substantial. The large corbel was a little bigger but now that we have them installed they look great. The s-shape of the corbel still leaves plenty of knee room.
Thanks for your professional advice and quick delivery.

Trevor, I just installed corbels on my front porch also. From your description, it sounds like we did the same exact thing. I love them, and your right, all my friends comment about them also. It seems so many people have these same ideas but dont know how to actually go about buying them. All i know is that they dont sell corbels ANYWHERE in my area. I love this website

I just installed the fluted corbels into the corners of the opening to my dining room. Before it was boring, and now, there is a nice curve to it, defining the entrance even more. I recommend it if you’re getting bored with your house.
- Sandy, September 4th, 2008 at 10:39 am
When I got and finally installed my corbels, the whole place was completely unrecognizable! It is almost as if the architecture of the house itself has been changed. It is the perfect way to give your house a face lift of sorts. I am surprised because corbels are something that i have never heard of before and they have impacted my house so much.

We needed corbels to hold up our mantels. We finally decided on the chicago brackets and they add so much detail to the room, but it is subtle at the same time. It’s great!
- Tom, September 5th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I saw the chicago brackets and i thought they were definitely the perfect thing to complete the overall look of our room. We decided to use them to hold up our mantle and there is no better bracket that we could have possibly used. We did not even think about using any corbels until our contractor recommended that we should and i do not regret it in any possible way.

Thank you InvitingHome.com for helping me pick the right corbels. I just wanted to let you know the corbels arrived this aftertoon. They are more beautiful than I had imagined! Also, the proportion matches our countertop. Thank you again for getting them here so quickly. I’ll now have time to stain them for my new counter-top install.
- Grace, September 10th, 2008 at 11:51 am
I received my corbels yesterday and was very happy with the workmanship on all pieces. They are going to look great in our kitchen as accent pieces. Thank you for you’re quick delivery on my corbels, they all arrived in great shape and on the date they were expected.I look forward to dealing with you’re company again and would not hesitate to recommend you to anybody.
Thanks Again - Ed

The article was very helpful in determining the correct corbel for my project. The corbels arrived this morning and they are great! Thank you for getting those shipped overnight. I appreciated your attention to the deadline we have on the project.
- Lori, September 10th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
I was looking through your website and I was wondering what the difference between brackets and corbels are… does anyone know??
- Anne, September 16th, 2008 at 9:37 am
I never knew corbels could have so many uses! Fireplace mantles, underneath countertops, supporting hoods in the kitchen! Wow. And the corbels on this website are very nicely priced and they look beautiful!
- Kendra, September 23rd, 2008 at 10:12 am
I know what you mean Anne, I have never really understood the difference. My perspective is that brackets are typically thinner and a little less ornate. Corbels seem to be wider, sometimes less in depth and more ornate… Does anyone here actually know!?
- Jacqueline, September 30th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I have been looking at corbels for so long that I now see them everywhere I go! I just chose the perfect corbel that I have been looking for on this website and I am so excited about. Finally! A corbel that goes perfectly with my kitchen!
- Bonnie, October 1st, 2008 at 9:24 am
I totally agree! Until I came across this website and realized how much architectural details are out there, I never really noticed too much. Now everytime I go to someones house, I notice every little detail and I appreciate it so much more because I know how much thought goes into it!
- Nancy, October 31st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I wish I had read this article before we ordered our corbels. It turns out the ones that we got for our countertop were not nearly deep enough and so we had to return them. Luckily, InvitingHome.com has a great return policy and we were able to exchange for the correct size with no problems.
- Nadine, November 12th, 2008 at 11:49 am
I had the same situation happen to me. But not only that, I wasn’t even told that I would even NEED corbels, until the installers came with my countertop. So I had to reschedule twice because then we bought the wrong size. What a nightmare. I must say though.. the corbels definetely add to the charm of my kitchen.
- Abby, November 13th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Abby, your situation sounds awful. I ran into a similar scenario. However, we were able to get them overnighted to us so it wasn’t so bad. I wonder why these guys who install the counters don’t warn us first.
- Paul, November 17th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
I know what you mean! You would think they would try to help you out and get you ready for such a big addition into the kitchen, you know?
- Whitney, November 20th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Wow, it seems like a lot of people are having this problem. Maybe you’re going to the wrong contractor! Mine was great and even told me the guidelines that needed to be met in order for me to get the correct corbel/bracket. My contractor told me that the depth of the corbel should be about 2/3 of the depth of the counter. I’m glad I took his advice, and now we have some beautiful corbels that add to the detail of our kitchen.
- John, November 26th, 2008 at 10:36 am
It took me a while, but I finally found the corbels that I want to support the overhang of the new bar I’m building. A guy’s dream come true, right? My very own bar! I will even have my favorite bud light on draft! But back to my story. The corbels that I chose definitely will add some style to the bar. It’ll be great!
- Tim, December 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
I have recently found a good corbel that will work in my kitchen. We had such a large overhang, I was worried we would have to go with an island leg - which was NOT something I wanted to have in my kitchen. Luckily they have a bracket that meets the requirements. I ordered it right away (after some decision help from their customer service line) and now everything is working out great. It is so nice to know there are people out there that can help out a little old lady like myself.
- Delores, December 4th, 2008 at 11:52 am
I know what you mean Delores. I was having a hard time too, but luckily there are some really large corbels available. And I know they’re tall, but we just put some into our kitchen and honestly, I really like how I can see so much of them. It adds a certain charm to my kitchen and I just love them.
- Barb, December 9th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I think it’s great that the corbels available are the website do not need any work done to them before they are painted or stained. And I also think it’s great that they have the plugs already installed into them. It really makes installation a lot easier.
- David, December 15th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
The range of sizes available on this site is great. I visited someone the other day and they were using really small brackets to hold up some shelves in their living room. It was great idea that I had never even thought of. There are so many options for the use of corbels.
- Kenneth, December 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
I have been having a really hard time choosing corbels. Until now anyway! This site makes it so easy to choose from all of the different styles. I even called to check stock and pretty much all of the corbels are stock items! It made it a lot easier, that’s for sure.
- Lonnie, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
It was hard enough just choosing the countertop that we are having installed, and then come to find out we need corbels as well. My husband and I can never agree when it comes to design. But all of the corbel choices that are available have made things easier. We’ve narrowed it down between two. The Los Angeles or the Boston. At least they’re almost the same design! I like the open back while my husband doesn’t. I think this is going to have to be settled by rock, paper scissors or a flip of the coin. Either way, at least we agree that corbel design is perfect for what we need!
- Adrienne, December 24th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I never would have thought that shopping for corbels could be such a hassle! I thought it would be simple. At first, shopping for these were just down-right hard. Then I came to InvitingHome.com and they made my life a whole lot easier by making shopping for these things a cinch. AND they even have a blog all about how to choose the right size. How smart is that?? I then knew what would and wouldn’t work for supporting our granite countertop. I am so glad I found this place!
- Kathy, December 30th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
During my shopping for corbels, I found out that I would need to find out what the size range would need to be before I even looked at the designs. I had found one that I really liked, and I thought it would work, but it didn’t work out for us and I had to return them. I settled for one that was the right size, and it’s still aesthetically pleasing, so I can’t complain. But a little advice: Look for the sizes first and THEN decide on a look.
- Brian, December 31st, 2008 at 10:24 am
Yes, size metters with these typed of things. It is hard to shop for these. but this site made easier. thanks!
