Ceiling Decor
Ceiling Decor Project
Rather than putting this decorative ring around a center medallion, or around a chandelier; I chose to put it around a very large and flat flush-mounted custom light fixture. I call it my “foyer pancake light” because it is 32 inches in diameter, and takes 8 full-size light bulbs, but it only projects about 10 inches from the ceiling.
As you can see from the photos, we painted the area in-between the rim and the light fixture a “chocolate milk” color, while the rest of the ceiling is an antique white, and the rim itself is bright white. You will notice that we were able to incorporate the rather inconveniently-located ceiling sprinkler head into the design, exactly in the middle of the inner circle area.
The finished result is striking, and it actually makes the light fixture look even bigger, as through the light fixture, the rim, and the area in-between is now all “one thing” five feet in diameter.
A word of encouragement to your customers… don’t panic if the four-piece rim you install has gaps between the pieces and doesn’t look perfect when you nail it up at first. As long as you have it aligned closely, it will all look A LOT BETTER as soon as you caulk it… the caulk takes up all the gaps and seams, and gives it a one-piece-look with barely-visible seams.
By the way… I am the world’s largest dealer of rare and antique Bibles (see my website at WWW.GREATSITE.COM) and you can see several ancient Bibles on the bookshelves in the
background of one of the photos.
Best Wishes,
John L. Jeffcoat

Hello John – I would like to start by thanking you for sharing your project with all of us. The picture really show how adding the extra detail of the running coin ceiling rim around your “foyer pancake” ties your beautifull light with the rest of the room.
I would also add that the touch of color between the ceiling rim and the pendant adds the element of appropriate scale to your grand entrance.
From our customers prospective they will apreciate your installation advice and “can-do” spirit.
As with many home project, paying attention to and executing that extra layer of detail brings glamour and interest to your home.
Congratulations on a job well done!
Sincerely:
Albert

That is absolutely beautiful. I have always wanted to do something that daring in my home, but I get so intimidated simply by how complicated it may sound. I think John is definitely a person who just goes for it and figures it out as he goes along. Than you, John for inspiration.
- Katherine, August 28th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I love what your customer did with the decorative rim. It makes the ceiling look like it has a large ceiling medallion instead of just the rim. I think that was a great idea and I am thinking that I can do that exact same design in my great room. Thanks for adding the blog to your site! It gives great Ideas to your customers!
- Bethany, August 28th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
I love the look and will use it on a job soon thanks for sharing the photo
- Shawn, September 1st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Wow – that looks really cool! It adds such a great accent for a room!

I was thinking about installing a dome into our master bathroom to not only open it up, but to create a secluded haven for me and my wife, and away from the kids. Would these do well in the bathroom?
- Kyle, September 3rd, 2008 at 12:15 pm
I love the look of the light. With the molding going around it almost looks like it was a large built in fixture instead of a light plus molding
- Gertrude, September 3rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Kyle, I have recently installed a dome into my bathroom and it is fantastic. It opens it up completely. I highly recommend adding that little detail to your bathroom.
- Barbara, September 4th, 2008 at 9:12 am
The decorative ring is a great idea – what a way to spruce up the area around a light fixture. Good idea.
- Jim, September 4th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
This is unlike anything that i have ever seen before. I absolutely love the idea for it! I think I could definitely try this in my own home since it does not sound nearly as intimidating as it did before. I cannot tell you how nervous I get about having new projects around my home- I never know what to expect exactly and am always afraid that things will go wrong.
- Ronny, September 7th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
My wife saw this and now she’s pretty much begging for me to do it too. It’ll definitely add a little something to our den.
- Dan, September 9th, 2008 at 11:28 am
This is so clever! I have been looking for something interesting to do around a light in my kitchen for a while now and I think I now have a solution! Thank you for the inspriring idea.
- Chelsea, September 15th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I saw this and decided I needed to do something to spruce up the area around my kitchen light. This is such a great idea!
- Holly, September 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 am
I decided to use a ceiling rim instead of a ceiling medallion. I think it adds a whole new feel to the room. The one that is pictured above looks fantastic!
- Lily, September 29th, 2008 at 10:03 am
I decided to go a little extra crazy get a small ceiling medallion and then I added a running coin around it. It looks great!
- Rae, October 1st, 2008 at 9:20 am
Oh my gosh Rae, that sounds like a great idea. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I like the photo up above, but… it’s not really my style if you know what I mean.
- Erica, October 3rd, 2008 at 9:31 am
I just bought a house and my girlfriend saw this online and kind of did the same thing. She even installed it as a surprise housewarming gift. It looks great and a lot of people comment on it when they walk into the house.
- Alex, October 20th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I love the idea of the running coin being added around a ceiling medallion.. It gives it such an elegant look I think. I especially love the way it looks with a contrasting color between the ring and the medallion. It almost gives the look of a huge medallion!! I am going to get some of these soon!
- Lilly, October 23rd, 2008 at 5:23 pm
I just went to my lawyers office, which is located in a converted victorian home. As soon as I walked in, the first thing that I noticed was all the trim on the ceiling. I never really ever thought of putting trim on the ceiling. I think its great idea! It really spruces up the place!
- Chris, October 30th, 2008 at 11:49 am
I think the running coin is a great idea. It’s almost like it adds a nice subtle touch that doesn’t overpower the light fixture, but adds the perfect finishing touch.. great job!
- Anna, November 4th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
I like ceiling coin. Looks very nice. I have my husband do for me too!
- Fai, November 12th, 2008 at 10:44 am
I wish that light fixture was available but I’ve looked everywhere and I have not found it. But I think that there are some other nice choices instead! I decided on a chandelier – it makes the room look that much more grand.
- Rachael, November 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
This is a really beautiful project. I couldn’t help but leave a little note. It is inspiring. I think I may even be able to do a project like this myself, which would be a great rainy day thing to do.
- Faith, November 14th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Wow. I really like the work that was done here. And it would look great in my house, with a different color painted on the inside of course. My condo is full of wild and crazy colors, so naturally I’ll have to keep up with the theme.
- Kathryn, November 17th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I’m expecting the ceiling rim by tomorrow so I can do the same thing this weekend. It’ll be slightly different (I have to add my own touches and personality, right??). I’m so excited.
- Laura, November 20th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I think this idea is great – it’s so simple, yet it really does add a lot of detail at the same time. Nicely done!
- Karen, November 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
This looks liek a reasonably easy project without too much hassle. Maybe if I do something like this before the family comes home for Christmas she’ll finally stop complaining about how our house needs some help. Thanks for the tip.
- Gene, November 26th, 2008 at 11:00 am
This really would be a nice touch to any room. And it’s such an easy project, anybody could do it before Christmas, which is what I am planning on doing. Maybe not like this project exactly, but it has certainly given me some ideas – and it will impress my kids when they come visit for the holidays.
- William, December 4th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Hey! That’s a good idea! I like it because it seems like a simple project that will make a difference. Thanks for the idea.
- Ernie, December 9th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I wish I had seen this before now. It would have been nice to habe something new done for Christmas. I’ll just have to impress everyone at Easter instead, I guess.
- Jerry, December 17th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
This is great! I didn’t even know about ceiling rims until I came across this site while looking for a medallion. I have a light fixture similar to this one and it’s nice to see that I can add some detail to that as well.
- Donald, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I know what you mean. I guess I have never really thought about decorating around a light before, but my wife came across this website and now I can see why she would want me to do this little project for her. We also have a lighting fixture pretty similar to this one, so this design was especially appealing for us I guess.
- Fred, December 24th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I have never seen something like this before. I have a house that was built back in the early 50s and when my grandchildren came for Christmas this year, I realized just how outdated my home really is. I have many lighting fixtures similar to this one, and it would be nice to update my home a little bit more as a surprise for when all of my grandkids come again.
- Geraldine, December 30th, 2008 at 10:47 am
This looks like a pretty easy project. I may have to look into doing something like this in our master bedroom. I think it will add a nice touch. We’ll have to see if the other half agrees
- Patrick, January 2nd, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I’ve been thinking about doing something new to our entry’s light fixture. The architecture in that area of the house is boring. This is a good idea and seems like a pretty basic addition to the lighting fixture. This is a good idea. Thank you.
- Kenny, January 14th, 2009 at 11:42 am
I have seen this picture a couple of times on this website and I really like the concept. My boyfriend and I were hanging out with some friends last weekend at their apartment and we (my boyfriend and I) both were thinking this kind of thing would be perfect in their living room. And then we would paint the inside with the same color they have on the walls, which is a deep purple. It’s sounds funny, but I really think it would look good. We’re thinking about getting them the ceiling rim as an anniversary gift for our friends. I think they would really appreciate it.
- Tara, January 20th, 2009 at 11:21 am
This is a cool idea. And sorry Tara, but I can not see how a deep purple would look good. But I guess everyone has their own style. I like the idea of painting the inside of the rim though. It probably adds to the rest of the room and compliments it nicely.
- Peter, January 21st, 2009 at 1:23 pm
I really like the idea of embellishing my lighting fixtures. It’s clever and looks relatively easy to put up. I never really thought about it before. Now I am thinking about getting some ceiling medallions for the thinner lighting fixtures too.
- Andie, February 13th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Came across this picture and love it, when you first walk into my house my library is on one side and the LR is on the other, and i had a light fixture installed in the ceiling in the libary and had crown moulding put in and painted the walls like a terra-cotta color, now i want to get this put around the fixture and paint the inside the same color as the walls this would be so pretty to see when you first walk into my home, but i dont want it to be real big, iam searching for a smaller size
- Malinda, February 18th, 2009 at 9:51 am
This seems like a relatively easy project. I’ve been looking to do something different (mostly at the insistance of my wife of course) and this seems like a great job for me and my sone to do together. Not only will it look great and really make the room look nicer, but it will create a time for my son and I to bond and then look back and say “we did that together”. (My son is 14 and seems like he’s about to hit that “stage”). It will be nice to do something like an in-home project on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
