Adding Personality to Your Kitchen

Giving your kitchen its own personality requires careful consideration focused on decorating, and adding the right finishes and details. The kitchen has to have as much thought and effort put into it as any other room in your home. Many don’t think about this, but most families spend a lot of time together in the kitchen – it s is usually the gathering place and all the meals that they would all eat together. A lot of the kitchen items make the room look very high-tech, but this may take away from the cozy feeling of the space.
If you have some sort of an idea of how you would like the kitchen space to look, then you may already have the skeleton for your design. If you see yourself stuck between the slick and chic contemporary kitchen, inviting and expansive traditional kitchen style and the warm lived-in feeling of the country style kitchen, look at the core of each particular design. Look around you for kitchen improvements ideas – books, magazines, television shows. That way you may piece together some sort of a backbone for the kitchen design, as well as finding possible ideas for color palettes and details.

Wow, I would have found this article last year when we were re-doing our kitchen!
- Ksne, August 21st, 2008 at 11:56 am
My husband loves our futureistic kitchen. It has a very cold feeling to it. I keep trying to convince him that we should add a few flowers, maybe something more country style in the kitchen, but he disagrees. I would love to see the two styles I guess our style personalities don’t match. But I’m sure that eventually i will get my dream kitchen.
- Anne, August 21st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
When I was redoing my kitchen, I went through a bit of a decorative identity crisis. I never realized that there are so many different routs to go and that I would actually like more than one particular style. In the end, I actually decided to combine all of the different styles– I ended up with a traditional and modern fusion in my kitchen. It is the most creative room that i ended up having in my whole house. It is also funny that I never even thought that kitchen would need to get so much of my thought and planning.
- Tina, August 27th, 2008 at 9:52 am
I completely agree with the post above this. I have no idea that there were so many different designs, but after visiting your website I was able to make the best choice possible. I will definately recommend your company to all my friends and family, I’m sure they will love you guys as much as I do!!
- Brent, August 27th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Personally, i never thought that combining different style would be a good idea, but i’m not a designer. I renovated my kitchen all in a contemporary style just last year and I’m saddened to say that i still don’t like it. I was never able to figure out what it was, but perhaps it’s just that, the fact that it’s all in one scene… I’m actually planning on redoing the kitchen once again in the fall, and perhaps I might add some contrast. Thanks for the ideas Tina.

I love my country style kitchen. It is so cozy! I have an apple theme that is so cute and quaint.
- Mary, August 28th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
I moved into a new house about a year ago and the first thing I needed to do was add some personality and fix up the old kitchen (honestly, it was like going back in the past about thirty years ago). After adding a couple of great onlays and adding some beautiful finishing touches (and crown molding too), not to mention getting rid of that AWFUL brown paint and mocha tiles, my kitchen is finally something I feel comfortable in. This kitchen is probably the most important room in the house (at least in my family). So I fixed it up – I didn’t want to have to hide my kitchen! But now it shows the personality of our family. So do whatever you have to do to make it YOURS!
- Josie, September 3rd, 2008 at 11:49 am
Josie, I totally agree! Every house I go in the Kitchen is by far the most used room. Every party always ends up there becuase usually there are a few people cooking or whatever. If you have the means to do so, everyone should redo there kitchen to make it there own since so much time is spent there. I love MY new kitchen!
- Bertha, September 3rd, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Definitely! If my kitchen would be anything other than what it is now, i highly doubt that i would even cook in it! I am in love with how homey it feels. Whenever I am in the kitchen cooking, my mood is completely lifted!
- Roberta, September 5th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
I just re-did my whole kitchen, but it is mostly because my kitchen is located in such a way that you have to walk through it to be able to get to the rest of the house- so there really was not much of a choice as to whether i should re-do my kitchen or not. I love it though, i finally am happy and proud to have people over.
- Helen, September 7th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
I wish I could remodel my kitchen.. Its the gathering room of like everyhouse I have gone to. I dont know what it is, but everyone always gathers in the kitchen. That why I wish I could gut the whole thing and start from scratch. Im jealous
- Cynthia, September 15th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I love visiting people’s homes because I feel like their personalities are brought out even more. A kitchen is no exception. A lot of people spend time in the kitchen – it is usually the heart of the house. So making it unique and special to you (who sees it everyday) is important.
- Jill, September 15th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I know that we all say that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but I think it is so funny that it is also one of the most forgotten room in the whole house… Many people just have it there for the function without even giving it a second thought decor wise. I guess in saying that it is the heart could also be almost metaphorical since we don’t think much about our hearts unless something is really wrong with them.
- Lucy, September 17th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Some of the decorative hardware that are available on this website and are wild and unusual, just like me! I now just need to think about what I want to do with my kitchen cabinets and a new cabinet that I am putting in my living room. Parrots? Elephants? Maybe even the roosters. I’m also going to detail my husband’s fishing cabinet with the fish knobs and pulls. How cool would that be??? But I think these knobs are seriously just one step towards adding personality to your kitchen. I HIGHLY recommend looking through them. They’re amazingly fantastic!
- Bridget, September 23rd, 2008 at 10:10 am
I totally agree. I love how ecentric some of the knobs and pulls are, the’re so cool.. I can’t wait to pick which ones I want for my kitchen. I am also doing a small den and I think im going to use the butterfly ones for that one. I also think that I may invest in one of the beautiful lamps!! im so excited
- Kristina, October 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I just visited my friend’s house and she had these fantastic looking knobs on her cabinets. I was dying to know where she got them! I’ve been trying to spruce up my kitchen, but was unsure of how to do it, but now I have so many ideas after visiting this website. I want my kitchen to scream “This is Sarah’s Kitchen!” And I can think of no better way to add my personality than to add the beautiful green aventurine jeweled lily knobs to my kitchen. Lilies are my FAVORITE and now I can add that little accent to my kitchen. I am so grateful!
- Sarah, October 31st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
My wife has added a lot of personality to our kitchen – or rather, I have (since I am the one who installed/put up everything). We have added some nice onlays to all of our cabinets and it really adds to the place. My wife loves it, which makes me love it too.
- John, November 10th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I have added some great touches to my kitchen. We have installed a beautiful onlay to our hood on above the stove. Also, we have three children and I let them all pick their own onlay for their own cubby area in our mudroom, which is basically yet another extension off of our kitchen. It’s nice and it definitely adds personality to our chaotic kitchen – much like our chaotic life!
- Hadley, November 12th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I have a certain knack for designing kitchens. I must have inheredited from being around my mother all the time, but that might be a little too much information for all of you strangers out there. Anyhoo. Adding personality to your kitchen is a complete must. I mean, how else would anyone know that the kitchen is YOUR domain. Adding those final touches really adds the personality into the place. (And Hadley: cute idea. Keep it up girl!)
- Caesar, November 13th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
My wife has certainly put her own personality into the kitchen (not to mention the rest of the house) and I have come to like what she has done with the place. Those crazy roosters all over the place don’t bother me nearly as much as they used to.
- Robert, November 17th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
hahahaha. thats so funny. My mother has a thing for rooster also. My dad always hated them! It’s just funny when I hear of other people having the same disputes that I always had in my family… At least you let her do her thing Robert! Its a must to a good marraige!
- Christa, November 19th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Roosters are nothing compared to all of the little pigs we have everywhere. Yes, pigs. My wife loves them. She grew up with them on a farm, and has even convinced me to start having our own pigs. It’s hog wild! (sorry – poor joke)
- Scott, November 20th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
lol. Well Scott, I bet it’s a good conversation starter for those who visit your home at least. As for me, I don’t actually have a “theme”, it’s more like a color scheme. I really like rich colors, so reds and yellows and similar deep, rich colors really appeal to me. And I really like the effect that it has on my kitchen.
- Karen, November 26th, 2008 at 10:23 am
I really enjoy going into other people’s homes and seeing how they decorate it. It really does say so much about the personality of the person. Whether it’s cluttered or there is not a speck of dirt anywhere! It really does say so much.
- Dalia, December 2nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
I know what you mean Dalia. It’s interesting seeing how people have arranged the pieces of their lives around them. Whether there are lots of family photos and what sort of knick knacks caught their eye enough to display it at their home.
- Jim, December 4th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I can’t help it. I always look at everything when I visit people’s houses. Those little details can really say a lot about people, and they often have stories behind them. I love hearing people’s life stories. So I can understand what you mean Jim and Dalia!
- Andrea, December 9th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
We have loved the contemporary look from the get go. Everything in our kitchen is silver and very sleek looking. No curves, just straight lines. It suits me and my life partner very well. It is amazing how much you can really do in a kitchen, that’s for sure.
- Steve, December 15th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
My kitchen sounds pretty similiar. Although we also liked the kitchen in our previous house as well. It was more a rustic kitchen style. I would have to say it probably showed a little bit more of our personality, but we also really like the new kitchen’s sleekness. It makes it very clean too.
- Craig, December 17th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I love sleek kitchens. It is so much easier to clean them because they already start off looking cleaner than rustic style kitchens… you know what i mean?!
- Marley, December 23rd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Little finishing touches definitely add a lot of personality to any room. It’s always interesting to see what direction people will take while decorating their own home.
- Toni, December 23rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
I personally think it is important to added special touches to any room of the house. It really does add something. You can tell how a person is by the way they decorate, or at least that is what my mom used to say. I guess I have taken her motto and have started using it for myself. But seriously, adding those personal touches is what gives the room personality.
- Martha, December 24th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Finishing touches are what makes the room what it is. Personally, I am all about the finishing touches. I love all of the interesting things that I can do to a room. I remember when I used to live in a dorm room I had a great affinity for making my room and comfortable and as homey as I possibly could. That almost always ended with my putting fabrics all over the walls. when you get a small enough room, every little thing that you put in there truly matters. it really helped the way i perceive the decoration of a space. I try my best to be very specific and deliberate with what i put in the room and the effect that it has. while not everything has to match perfectly and having an eclectic feel to it. I love all my spaces to look like they have been lived in, but still look nice and clean. People really have to remember that you can definitely have both– it is never just one or the other– it never is just one or the other.
- Katie, December 29th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
My wife has certainly added a lot of “personality” to our kitchen, not to mention everywhere else in the house. My wife is what you could call a “compulsive decorator”. Our house isn’t cluttered by any means, but I have definitely found my house completely rearranged every once in a while when I come home from work. I guess it keeps the house more exciting, and I let her do it because it keeps her busy and happy. I think that our kitchen is my favorite room that she has ever decorated.
- Wayne, December 30th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
There is nothing wrong with that Wayne! At least it’s never boring in your house!
- Jean Ann, December 31st, 2008 at 10:05 am
I have put a lot of my own personality into the kitchen, I will admit that. A long with every other member of my family. We have a classic country style I guess. I have no idea what to call it.. I honestly don’t think any kitchen is the same. And unless you have some kind of fancy decorator or something, then I’m guessing most kitchens have a few styles combined. Either way, it’s MY kitchen!
- Lori, January 2nd, 2009 at 4:53 pm
I think a kitchen definitely carries out the personality of those who live there. Actually, come to think of it, any room can have personality based on those who inhabit those spaces. I think that adding little things here or there, or making the room a bright one based on the bright outlook you might have on life is great. It certainly makes a room more interesting!
- Nina, January 5th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Our family is thinking about remodeling our kitchen. After all of the descriptions up above about all of the different styles to choose from. I personally think that the country style would suit us best, seeing as how we are such an inviting family with lots of love to go around to begin with. We’ll probably take a vote and see what we do. We like to have everyone in on our plans.
- Jennifer, January 7th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I love the country style! All of the modern styles seem as if they do not use enough different trinkets and i feel the space just ends up looking completely empty. The modern styles never look like they were actually lived in– it is frightening to spend anytime in there because I immediately like an outsider. I love my ruffled curtains in my kitchen window. I love my decorated china and my decorative chairs. I have always believed that to make a place that other people would like to be in, you first have to make a place that you love to be in.
- Hank, January 9th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I think our kitchen is more of a country style too. It’s very nice and spacious. I would definitely recommend this style.
- Carl, January 13th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
I agree with your last sentence, Hank. I just recently redid my home and I now love the space that I live in. And so far everyone who has come over has really expressed how much they love it too. It’s truly a wonderful thing to be complimented on something that you are proud of.
- Suzanne, January 14th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
If anyone has personality in her kitchen, it would be me. My whole entire house has personality. Bright pinks, blues, greens and even oranges are splashed all over my walls. You might think I’m crazy, but I just love bright colors. They accentuate my life and my lifestyle. Plus I’m a painter so I’ve decorated everything and painted everything myself. It might be a little extreme, but at least my home has extreme personality
- Vanessa, January 19th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
My kitchen has a whole lot of personality. But it’s all things that happen around my every life. Whether it be the kids or my daughter’s cat that is always loafing around in the window sill by our sink (weird cat, I know), there’s some kind of country charm to it I guess.
- Dawn, January 22nd, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Did you ever walk into someone’s home and think, “I wish I had ideas like this?” My friend Julie has a husband who is a carpenter and her cabinets are beautiful and sport a personalized look. The reason? They used very different cabinet hardware than what you get at the local hardware chains and I loved the effect. I found an even more unique collection of decorative hardware on this website. Who else would have that?
Everyone can appreciate at the detail in this beautiful and distinctive cabinet hardware. That’s what will set your kitchen apart – it’s one of the little touches that will give your room a completely different flavor. (Your friends will be asking you where you got your decorative hardware!) It’s another simple yet effective way to let your own taste and personal style show in your home.

We moved from a large, beautiful, custom designed home (designed by the previous owners, not us) with gorgeous cabinetry and cherry inlaid floors to a very average, cookie cutter home almost half the square footage. We had no idea how many things from our custom designed home that we would miss. Tonight while surfing online for decorating ideas to help my poor, neglected kitchen, I found myself drawn over and over to beautiful kitchens. At first I thought it was the wood used in the cabinets or maybe the tile backsplash, but the real eye-catching design in the kitchen cabinets are in the detail; the molding details! Take a regular set of cabinets, top with some Ventura crown molding and you have a completely different look. One that takes cookie-cutter cabinets to new heights.
- Kate, February 6th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
I am in the middle of remodeling my mother’s kitchen as a Christmas present. Boy, is she appreciating it. We always gather at her house for our family get-togethers and I am wondering what the rest of the family’s reactions will be when we all meet up for Easter in a couple of months. I still have a little work ahead of me, but this site has an inspiration guide that is.. well, inspiring! My mother picked out a few ideas based on the pictures from this site and I really think it is going to do wonders for the kitchen. I know that the two of us are pretty excited for it at least. I’m just worried that if my sisters see this, they’ll be wanting a new kitchen from me too. But hey, what are sons and brothers for?
- Noah, February 10th, 2009 at 10:59 am
We have a country style kitchen, which is great to come home to after a long day at work. It’s so warm and inviting. It’s nice to just come home and relax with my family around our kitchen table. We have added a lot of personality to it over the years and I can say that it is definitely a reflection of who are family really is.
- David, February 13th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
My husband and I are trying to compromise and come up with a new kitchen design for the house we are designing and trying to build. I prefer an open country style kitchen, he prefers a modern kitchen. We’re still working out the kinks but I think we’re coming close to a solution and perfect compromise. We’ll see what happens. Either way, I’m sure our kitchen will have a lot of personality!
- Maria, February 17th, 2009 at 11:54 am
I just moved into a new house and my kitchen has a serious lack of personality. I am really excited to see what I can do with this space in my home. I will be able to paint it and do whatever I want with it. This is the first house I have actually owned, so it is exciting to be able to choose how I want it to look. I am so excited!
- Yolanda, March 12th, 2009 at 11:11 am
We have recently moved into an older style home and all the things I brought from my old kitchen seemed a little to modern for the feel of this kitchen. I didn’t want to have to re-do the whole thing over again, and so after reading the article I thought about how to make my old furnishings mesh with the new style of my kitchen. I managed to keep almost everything while adding in some new ideas, and it has worked wonderfully! Now I think this is a perfect idea for every room in my home. Thanks!
- Marisa, March 13th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
I grew up on a farm most of my life, and now still live in the country. My kitchen is also country style with roosters everywhere. I was reading about adding personality, and thought maybe on your website I would be able to find more rooster decorations to add. Well I did I found kitchen cabinet rooster knobs! I can’t wait until my husband sees these!
- Suzanna, April 22nd, 2009 at 3:31 pm
I am so excited to finally be motivated to splash my whole kitchen with color. It is the place that people spend the most time and finally, now i realized that it needs more attention. i am the cook of the house and if i am spending upwards of 3 hours in the kitchen everyday, i should enjoy all the beauty as well.
- Doris, June 24th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
