This eight-panel folding screen is made from
wood and hand-painted in Japanese style. The back of this decorative
folding screen is hand-finished in antiqued crackled black. In
opposite from Chinese folding screens the Japanese style screens do
not have elaborate borders and ornamentation. This folding screen with Japanese
design has one large composition that is flows from one panel to the next. Hand-painted design features seven graceful cranes and a river scene with clouds,
blooming plum tree and bamboo grass. Cranes are among the prime symbols of longevity and good
fortune in Japan. For at least two millennia the Japanese have viewed them as
living to great ages and being able to navigate between heaven and earth. In Japan, the
crane is the bird most frequently seen in fine and applied arts. Also cranes are
the common subject of painting on folding screens, it is most
closely associated with new beginnings and wedding ceremonies. Clouds are taking
a big part of the screen's composition. In Japanese art, clouds are among the
most extensively used components of a composition, therefore they rarely convey
a since of weather and most often are painted on a folding screens in stylized form
