Planning Your Space for Chair-Rail

When creating design with chair rail it is important to establish a plan for the layout.

Chair rail is typically installed 1/3 up from the floor (32" to 36"). Frieze molding is typically installed just below cornice molding or a few inches below ceiling like a border.

- Start by measuring your room to determine linear footage of chair rail molding needed.

- Add 10% of total length for miter waste.

- Divide total linear feet by chair rail lengths to determine total molding pieces.
For example: If chair rail comes in 8-foot lengths, divide total linear feet by 8 to determine how many pieces of chair rail are needed.

- Round up the number of pieces needed to determine total number of chair rail lengths you will need to purchase.

- Consider adding additional length to your purchase to "match the pattern" of chair rail, ensuring a consistent appearance. For molding with repeats greater than 6" consider adding an additional 5% to total length

Before Chair-Rail Installation

You can finish (paint or faux finish) chair rail molding before or after installation. After installation of chair rail molding touch-up any area as needed

- Clean all surfaces free of dirt and loose particles with a clean cloth or sponge.

- Make sure area is completely dry before installing.
